sheer taste, tormented by thirst, accompanied by the whole herd of bull and female
elephants and the youn ones, almost causin tremors in the mountain by their weiht,
he
smelt from afar the lotus pollen!filled bree"e on the la#e, and with eyes tremulous in a
state of rut, speedily approached the $icinity of the la#e% &'3!'()% *lunin into it, he
dran# to his heart+s content the immaculate, sweet ambrosial water, fla$oured by the
pollen of the olden lotuses, lilies, suc#in it with his trun# and freely showerin on
himself, and with his fatiue one, e,ually offerin mouthfuls and a liberal sprin#le of
bath to his retinue of cubs and female elephants li#e a lo$in householder, unaware in
his
self importance of impendin peril &'-!'.)%
/here, Oh #in0 as ill luc# would ha$e it, a powerful crocodile fiercely cauht his le,
and the elephant, accidentally so cauht unaware, himself of immense strenth,
accordinly tued his best% /he cow ! elephant and other chic#en hearted ones seein
their leader in distress, 1ust pulled forcibly, trumpeted in sorrow, unable to extricate him
by pullin him holdin from the rear% &'2!'3)%
4s the noble elephant and the crocodile so fouht one pullin in and the other out, a
thousand years elapsed, both yet ali$e and alert to the ama"ement of e$en the celestials
&'5)%
/hen by the lon passae of time the strenth of the elephant both mental and physical
as
well as his enery slowly ebbed6 and as the strenth of the one pulled into the water
diminished, that of the a,uatic animal increased% /hus when the elephant was in a sad
situation and despaired of his life, unable e$er so lon to free himself, thouht of an idea%
/hose of my il# cannot sa$e me, how can the female ones help7 8auht by the noose of
*ro$idence in the shape of the crocodile 9 shall see# :im the ultimate refue% 9 see#
refue of the ;ord that protects the scared see#in :is refue, for refue from the
powerful serpent of Death that pursues e$er so swiftly, but yet itself runs away in utter
fear of the ;ord% &3<!33)%

/he ;ord of the elephants uttered !! Salutation to that ;ord from whom e$erythin
sentient arises% /o the *urusha the primordial seed, the ;ord of all, 9 bow% 9 ta#e shelter
in
:im, in Ahom is the entire uni$erse, from Ahom it all emanates% Aho is :imself its
cause and Aho is beyond all the utmost beyond% &'!3)%
:ail to that Uttermost beyond all, rooted in :imself, in Ahom by :is own illusion :e
holds the uni$erse somewhere, illumines it somewhere else, and causes its
disappearance
still elsewhere% Ahose perception is undimmed and who loo#s on, both as the witness
and the witnessed% &()%
9 adore the ;ord that, when the entire uni$erse is lost at the destined time, all the worlds,
the protectors of the worlds, the;o#palas themsel$es, and all the causes of the world
ha$e disappeared, when there is only one deep dar#ness all o$er, shines brilliant at one
end &-)%
Bay that ;ord protect me, Ahose abode neither the celestials nor the seers #now, nor
any other bein can try to reach or attempt to describe :im, Aho in :is mo$ements acts
li#e an actor impossible to be imitated% &.)%
:e is my refue, to siht Ahose most auspicious abode the seers lon for, seers so
entle
and ood, free from all shac#les, identifyin themsel$es with all li$in beins and with
the friendliest spirit towards all, try throuh penance in the forest, where there is peace,
and which is different from worldly life% &2)%
9 hail the ;ord, for Ahom there is no birth, no particular action to perform, no name or
fame, no merit or demerit, but who howe$er creates :imself for the ood of the world by
:is own illusory power from time to time% &3)
Salutation to that ;ord of lords, to the creator, to the infinitely powerful, to the formless,
for the multiform, for the most wonderful in action6 salutation to that lamp that lihts
itself, to the witness of all, to the spirit in all, to the one e$er sofar away from $erbal
description, unapproached e$en by mind or thouht% &5!1<)%
Salutation to the ;ord, that is obtained only by peace% complete renunciation of action,
and intellectual contemplation% Salutation to the ;ord ofCai$alya, who alone #nows the
1oy of bliss,nir$ana% Salutation to the peaceful one, to the terrific, to the idiotic, to the
one characterised by the hihest ,ualities, to the unendin, to the extraordinary, to the
impartial, to the wealthiest in true #nowlede, to the one who #nows the#shetra, proper
soil where the seed would thri$e% /he ;ord of all, the witness, to the *urusha, to the one
emanatin from :imself, to the oriinal enerator% Salutation to the one who sees the
best
in all the senses, the cause of e$erythin, who is described as the absent and the
existent,
and e$er shinin &11!1()%
Salutation aain and aain to the cause of e$erythin, who is the cause of none and,
who
is the wonderful cause of e$erythin, who is the reat ocean of all sacred texts6
salutation
to the hihest liberation and the ultimate of refue6 salutation to the fire of chit hidden in
the arani stic# of the hihest ,ualities, i%e% whose mind re$els in chit when there is a
disturbance of balance of the unas% Aho is self!luminous, is free from Sastraic
reulations and actions thereunder% &1-)%
Salutation to the liberator from the noose for all creatures li#e us, the e$er free, the most
compassionate, who meres in none, the reat ;ord that sees the ultimate from the mind
of e$ery one in whom :is spar# is present, who is beyond the reach of those attached to
self, children, friends, home, wealth and companions, Aho is free from ,ualities and
attachment, Aho is contemplated mentally by those liberated from births, to the $ery
essence of supreme #nowlede, by worshippin Ahom those who desire Dharma,
