Baranga: a card game about culture

Aim:
to make people discover the principles of culture and interaction
between different cultures
Number of participants:
minimum 16, maximum 60, divided in tables of to 6 people ideall!
"aterial:
a deck of pla!ing cards #with onl! cards from 1 to $% per table, a table
number, a pen per table, a score sheet and the a different set of rules
per table
&etting:
!ou put enough tables in a room far awa! from each other #so that the
pla!ers can't hear each other discussing the rules(a bit of music can
serve the same purpose%: the number of tables depends on the
number of pla!ers) *he material #see above% lies on the table
+ow to pla!:
,ou explain to the participants that the exercise is about non(verbal
communication #do not tell them that it is a game about culture
otherwise the pla!ers will suspect the trick of the exercise alread!%)
-xplain what material the! will find on the tables and the different
stages of the game #see further%) Ask if some people have alread!
pla!ed the game: the! can be observers) *he participants are seated
in smaller groups at the tables and are asked to learn to pla! a simple
card game, for which the! had received the rules on paper) *he
participants learn, explain and practice the rules at each table
#.uestions should be dealt with discretel! at the table according to the
rules the! have%)
/nce ever! table has read the rules and start to practice, the real
tournament starts) 0rom this moment onwards people are not allowed
to speak an!more, nor use an! written words) *he pla!ers start
counting the scores 1 the sheets with the rules are taken awa!) After a
round of the tournament #10 minutes%, the loser of each table goes a
table down #the tables have a number% and the winning person goes
up one table) *hen the second round of the tournament starts for 10
minutes) *he winners and losers move again and a next round is
pla!ed etc) #0our rounds is plent!%) After the game !ou move in
debriefing groups #see debriefing sheet%, preferabl! not too big
groups)
/bservers: the! watch the reactions of the participants, especiall!
after moving tables) 2eople usuall! start protesting, some start
giggling, some fists bang on the table) *he newl! formed groups of
pla!ers realise that the rules are slightl! different at each table #or
some don't%, but the aim is still to pla! the card game) *hrough non(
verbal communication, the groups agree on rules and continue pla!ing)
2eople generall! get better and better at the game, explaining and
negotiating the rules)
3ariation: if !ou have a ver! big group with 6 people at a table, !ou
can ask the two winners and the two losers of each table to move
tables
,ou can find a description and ordering information about this game
called 4Barnga, a game about cultural clashes4 at
www)bookmasters)com5interclt5)
6ebriefing: ,ou start explaining that the game was a simulation and
that the most important moment of the game is the debriefing) ,ou
generall! start with a round of first reactions and impressions) *hen
!ou talk about what happened in the game) *he next stage is then to
make the link with real life and last but not least !ou can ask what
the! would do differentl! next time)
*he principle behind the card game is the following: 7t is a simulation
of cultural encounters) -ver!bod! has an own set of rules #cultural
norms 1 behaviour% which !ou ac.uire in a first round of practising of
the card game at !our own table #socialisation during childhood%) *he
rules become !ours and !ou don8t need the sheets of paper an!more
to be able to pla! the game #the parents don8t have to tell !ou
an!more how to greet visitors or how to eat appropriatel! for
example%) ,ou take !our rules for granted) 7t becomes more
complicated when !ou change tables #meeting different cultures% or
when someone else from a different table comes and visit !ours
#immigrants or tourists for example%) &ometimes pla!ers didn8t even
realise that the rules were different at another table #ethnocentrism%
and 9ust thought that the pla!ers there had misunderstood the game)
*here are different strategies in order to be able to continue pla!ing a
game #managing cultural differences%) ,ou can impose !our original
rules, !ou can take the rules of the other #in order to win% or !ou can
create a new game with new creative rules) 7mportant in this process
is communication, which was non(verbal in this simulation) *he more
!ou change tables #travelling, living in different countries, doing
exchanges%, the better !ou can deal with the differences, because !ou
alread! expect them to be different and !ou create some skills in
discovering the rules #intercultural sensitivit!% and in negotiating them
or adapting to them)
