The Botvinnik Rose
from Its Grave in 2003!
Playing the Slav is like having a
distinctive blood type: those that
play the Moscow Variation
(5....h6) would never play the
Botvinnik (5...dc4) and those
who play the Slav Accepted
(4...dc4) dont want to hear
about any gambit lines. (I personally never tried the Moscow
Variation and had just a few
games with 4...dc4). Of these
three blood groups, Botvinnik
players have had the hardest time
of it lately, as the only playable
line left was 17...ed5, successfully defended by Alexey Shirov
as Black against Ruslan

The biggest boost to the lines
viability to date was the totally
unexpected win by Andrey
Obodchuk over Alexander
Onischuk in Poikovsky 2003.
The game selection is divided
into four groups:

Alexander Shabalov
Mikhalevsky-Shabalov, World
Open 2003, and Nikolic-Knaak,
Rethymnon 2003, represent the
two directions in which (in my
opinion) the line will develop in
the future. Victors improvisation 17.a4 led to quick disaster
after Blacks strong 17...b6!.
Predrags plan with 18.a3 clearly
didnt work, as the weakening of
the c3 square proved to be of no
importance.
