There are many types of plants that grow on earth. Plants usually like wet and cool places with
fresh air to grow. Nevertheless, the cactus is a very unique plant. It can live in very hot places. It has
special features that help it to survive in the hot desert. The stem has chlorophyll to help it grow. The
stem is thick and can store water for the plant to grow healthy in the hot and dry desert. The cactus can
store water in its stem for a very long time. Many cacti have very long roots. These roots help the
cactus to absorb water from the ground.
A cactus can be in many shapes and sizes. A cactus could be small and round or even pole-like and
tall. The tallest is 19.2 m. and the smallest is only about 1 cm. Cactus has flowers too. The flowers are
large. Many cactus species bloom at night because they are pollinated by small animals that come out
at night.

The leaves of the cactus are actually the thorny spines. These thorns do not lose water in the hot
desert. That is why the cactus can live in the dry desert. The thorny spines also protect the cactus plant
from animals.
