Rinosinusitis is inflammation of the mucosa in the paranasal sinuses and nasal passages that can be caused by allergies, infections, or other non-infectious conditions. Clinicians should distinguish between acute bacterial rhinosinusitis and rhinosinusitis caused by viral infections or non-infectious diseases based on symptoms persisting for 10 days or more after an upper respiratory infection or symptoms worsening again within 10 days after initial improvement.

A clinician should diagnose ABRS when : (a) symptoms or signs of acute rhinosinusitis are present 10 days or more beyond the onset of upper respiratory symptoms, or (b) symptoms or signs of acute rhinosinusitis worsen within 10 days after an initial improvement (double worsening).
