Park Effect
As we saw in t he previous sect ion on t he wake effect , each wind t urbine will
slow down t he wind behind it as it pulls energy out of t he wind and convert s it t o
elect ricit y.
Ideally, we would t herefore like t o space t urbines as far apart as possible in
t he prevailing wind direct ion. On t he ot her hand, land use and t he cost of
connect ing wind t urbines t o t he elect rical grid would t ell us t o space t hem closer
t oget her.
Park Layout
As a rule of t humb, t urbines in wind parks are usually spaced somewhere bet ween
5 and 9 rot or diamet ers apart in t he prevailing wind direct ion, and bet ween 3
and 5 diamet ers apart in t he direct ion perpendicular t o t he prevailing winds.
In t his pict ure we have placed t hree rows of five t urbines each in a fairly
t ypical pat t ern.
The t urbines (t he whit e dot s) are placed 7 diamet ers apart in t he prevailing
wind direct ion, and 4 diamet ers apart in t he direct ion perpendicular t o t he
prevailing winds.
Energy Loss from the Park Effect
Wit h knowledge of t he wind t urbine rot or, t he wind rose , t he Weibull
dist ribut ion and t he roughness in t he different direct ions manufact urers or
developers can calculat e t he energy loss due t o wind t urbines shading one
anot her.
Typically, t he energy loss will be somewhere around 5 per cent .
