SUBNETWORK CONNECTION PROTECTION
(SNCP
In a Sub-Network Connection Protection (SNCP) ring, identical copies of the
trafc are transmitted simultaneousl o!er both the working line and the
protection line, one in a clockwise direction, and the other in a
counterclockwise direction"
#he better signal is alwas selected b the recei!er to be the working line" If
there is an interruption between network elements $ and %, the recei!er
switches to the protection path and immediatel takes up the connection"
#his is the same as &'& protection" #hus, the (&-() protocol is not needed,
and the switcho!er is !er fast because it is done locall onl" *nl one of
the two rings is used in case of a failure--this is also an e+ample of
unidirectional switching"
!igure 1"SNCP o#er ring topo$og%"
&irtu'$ Ring Inter(onne(tion
#he main di,erence with SNCP is that each direction of the connection uses
two di,erent paths (&'&) following opposite direction and using di,erent
gatewas"
)rop 'n* Continue ()+C
In drop and continue an inter-ring connection is bridged in the
gatewa node on the source ring and continues along the ring to
lea!e the ring also through another interconnection gatewa, whereas
a gatewa node on the destination ring selects the best of both
copies" -.C could be used to connect SNCP rings, /S-SP rings or to
connect SNCP and /S-SP rings"
!igure 2" )rop 'n* Continue (SNCP rings"
!igure ," )+C SNCP 'n* -S.SP rings (onne(tion"
-SP #s SNCP
#he /SP ring is more comple+ to handle than the sub network connection
protection (SNCP) ring, but it also has more 0e+ible capacit, and the
ad!antages of /SP make it !er efcient in terms of the use of network
infrastructure" #his is especiall true if there is a lot of trafc between
ad1acent nodes on the ring"
2nlike an SNCP ring, to perform proper protection switching in the case of
failure on an /SSP ring, coordination is re3uired between the add4drop
multiple+ers ($-/5s) so that the switcho!er to the protection path is
harmonious at both ends"
#he most important ad!antage of the /SP ring is that bandwidth can be
reused on non-o!erlapping segments of the ring"
$nother ma1or ad!antage of this technolog is that low priorit trafc can be
transported on the unused protection channels, whereas this feature is
impossible in the SNCP technolog" #his lower order trafc is discarded in
cases where the protection channel is needed"
Sub-Network Connection Protection (SNCP) is a per path protection" Is a
mechanism for S-6 networks pro!iding path protection (end-to-end
protection)" #he data signal is transmitted in a ring structure !ia two
di,erent paths and can be implemented in line or ring structures" $
protection protocol is not re3uired" SNCP is a &'& protection scheme (one
working and one protection transport entit)" Input trafc is broadcasted in
two routes (one being the normal working route and the second one being
the protection route)"
#he ad!antage of the SNCP architecture is the simplicit of operation" No
e+tra signaling protocol is needed to perform protection switching in case of
failure" #he protection switching mechanism is working autonomousl in
each node, alwas selecting the signal with the better 3ualit" In the case of
a failure, SNCP pro!ides fast switcho!er, independent of the rest of the
network" #he main disad!antage of this sstem is that the bandwidth
needed for the protection trafc cannot be used for anthing else, and
therefore increases the costs of the network infrastructure"
ITU.T Re(ommen*'tions
$ll #he de7nitions of protections architecture are de7ned on the I#2-#
recommendation 8"9:& with the name ;#pes and characteristics of S-6
network protection architectures<"
