Practicum student/ Relief staff Training Tasks and Responsibilities

1. Observe at least 2 youth intakes.


2. Complete an intake with staff supervision.
3. Become familiar with the daily documentation and logs and utilize them while on shift.
4. Case note conversations with youth/family members/professionals.
5. Complete the discharge summary for a youth you are co-case managing with staff.
6. Go through discharge planning (including relapse strategies) with at least one youth
during your placement.
7. Familiarize yourself with the various programs the YES Agency provides as well as the
most common referral resources (BOH, Discovery, JHSNI, and BGCS) and the services
they offer. Look at it from the perspective of a youth assessing these services for the first
time.
8. Plan and facilitate a weekly recreation outing with the assistance of an SYD staff
member.
9. Plan and facilitate at least 1 group programming session with the clients. Focus on issues
of interest for the youth such as triggers, how to deal with peer pressure, harm reduction
strategies.
Take on a project that would be beneficial to the SYD program and the youth/families they
serve. Present topic to Manager/SYD staff supervisor for approval.

Skills and Knowledge
1. Ability to establish rapport with the youth.
2. Group facilitation skills (outings/activities).
3. Managing group dynamics.
4. Develop strong objective observation skills used for case notes and other logs.
5. Develop a working knowledge of the drugs youth are using and the withdrawal
symptoms.
6. Develop a strong working knowledge of the stages of change.
7. Develop a strong working knowledge of community resources for youth and their
families.
8. Become comfortable in using counselling skills (informal setting) and use a client
centered approach.
