City College Announces Alternative to Federal Budget Decision for Work-Study Programs
CHICAGO, October 1, 2014- In response to a budget cut of work-study programs by the federal government, City College will implement an alternative for students. The federal government announced at the end of last month that funding for work-study programs will be cut by 5 percent. City College will instead cut hours worked by students in the program by 5 percent, rather than cutting students from the program.
The decision will allow 20 percent of the student body enrolled in the program to stay registered. City College is able to cover expenses lost from federal budget cuts with the new reduction in student workers hours.
"The students enrolled in the program rely on the aid to pay for tuition. We cannot deny students entry into programs that proved federal aid in exchange for their willingness to work hard while they are in school. Five percent of students cut from the program may not seem like much, but to 750 students, it could mean the difference of receiving an education or not," said Rachel Allen, Director of Student Work-Study.
City College serves approximately 15,000 students. The two-year-old institution upholds a trusted reputation in the community as a college dedicated to student success. While striving to provide quality education to its students, it also aims to make education affordable for all students. ###
