CITY COLLEGE FINDS A WAY TO LESSEN THE BURDEN OF BUDGET CUTS

CHICAGO, ILL. – City College announced today that it will not cut students from the federal

work study program, despite the recent decrease in federal funding. Instead, City College will

simply trim each student’s work hours by 5 percent.

The cut in federal funding was announced at the end of last month and will affect all

other colleges and universities in the nation that have work study programs.

City College’s decision comes as a result of a great deal of consideration for the

students involved in the program. Approximately 20 percent of the student body receives

federally-supported work study.

“I was nervous when I heard about the budget cuts,” said Lindsey Wells, a City College

junior and student worker. “Once I heard that the college would not be laying off any workers, it

was certainly a relief. I don’t think I would be able to make ends meet if I was cut from the

program.”

“Every college and university across America is experiencing the effects of the federal

budget cuts,” said City College representative Linda Thompson. “We wanted to lessen the

burden of the cuts on our students and we believe our decision will enable us to do so.

City College is an urban two-year institution with approximately 15,000 students.
