Reflection: Competency #2
SEI 650

The products chosen for competency #2 are to represent my knowledge and
experience with collaborative consultation, service coordination and teaming.
The first product was completed in Summer 2012 in SEI 508. I included my
contribution towards the TPBA report that I completed with 3 other colleagues. The
TPBA was a true team effort in that we needed to meet and coordinate who was
going to assess what domain and who was going to do which write up. It wasnt
always easy trying to collaborate between 3 other people and communication was
key in getting this project done. It was also completed in one of the first classes we
took so it set the mood for what we would need to do in regards to working together
just like we would be doing in the field.
The second product is the objectives of the Staff-In-service Day that I had
planned for the staff at Youth and family Outreach on March 15
th
, 2013. I choose
this product because it involved me creating a survey to pass out to the teachers to
determine what their needs were around training. After receiving the surveys back
I determined that training around environments would be the best course to suit
everyones needs. I came up with an agenda and found handouts for the staff. I
arranged for the staff to visit different centers in the area, so that meant me calling
the other center directors and arranging the visits. This was as much about
collaboration between YFO and other centers as it was about service coordination.
This project gave me a really firm understanding about how a complete service
coordination might occur, from the concept to the set up and then the execution of
it.
The third product is a reflection from my practicum that I completed in
Spring of 2014. Part of my project was to lead a staff meeting at Youth and Family
Outreach incorporating parent involvement ideas that were discussed at the Parent
Advisory Committee meeting. My part was to attend the PAC meeting and talk
about parent involvement strategies. I was able to have an open discussion with the
parents about what motivates them to get involved and what they would like to see
from the classrooms. The product represents true teaming in the sense that I
teamed with both the parents and the staff to make sure everyones needs were met.
It was great to get feedback from the parents and be able to share it with the staff.
As a result parent involvement has overall been up at the center.
My final product is a TA plan that I came up with for my work with Maine
Roads to Quality as a Technical Assistance Consultant. I worked with the director of
another center to help move her center from a step 1 on the Quality Rating Scale
towards a step 2. This plan involved phone and email communication and weekly
check-ins to determine progress and needs that I could help meet. This was my first
TA work I have done for MRTQ and look forward to being involved in many more. I
feel that my background and familiarity with collaborative consultation, service
coordination and teaming really helped me be successful in the Technical Assistance
that I was able to provide.
