This poem describes the speaker's feelings of defeat, envy, and isolation after being dethroned from a position of power. The speaker's heart has grown cold, and they are tormented by past grudges and failures. Though their heart remains in ruins, the speaker hopes God will provide solace and restore hope to their weary soul.

When In contest of the royals where new kings were enthrone,
I go straight be done by my instinct’s lore, Where men’s lips were silenced by the trumpet’s horn, I all alone somber by defeat’s gore.
My mind go astray when laurels give by the kings,
Where I scorned my state abjected by some things, Eternal coldness abides my heart in solitude, Ablaze by fire but it just loft the fortitude.
I’m like a king toppled in his lofty place,
beweep by grudges and gashes my internal heirs, Vexes lurked and attacked me as I walked, Cursed my fate be done by evil and envy’s yoke.
In my heart, a palace of ruins built for so long,
Hoping I could fix it though storms impede his chaotic throng, Tons of thorny burdens behold by my weary heart, Wishing for God’s grace to give hope for my soul apart
