Unit D: skills share

These are my Instructions for cutting woodcut blocks and printing them, I have already
demonstrated this within the classroom. I have documented what we was taught in lesson and now
Im ready to pass on what Ive learnt.
a) First you need to trace your image onto the wood block this can be done using transfer
paper. Then go over the tracing with a black marker pen.
b) Then you need to examine your image and select 3 tones
(Shadows, mid-tones and highlights) and make a guide so you know what to cut from the
original drawing.
c) Begin to cut the lightest colour away from the image on the woodblock usually the white
parts or the highlights. Then we prepare to ink the colour we want first which will be the
mid-tone. We will repeat this action until we get to the key colour, which will be the black
outline.
d) When inking the block make sure the area you use will be free of obstacles and clean so the
paper you print on does not get damaged. Make sure you make a registration plate so you
can align each time; that way you dont lose your image.
e) Use the barren tool to spread the ink evenly over the paper but try not to go to hard as this
will overprint and probably smudge.
f) Once finished pull the paper slowy off the block and leave to dry.
