Mech Troubleshooting. Is it the Mech or the Circuitry?
Mech J ammed? Replacing the mech is the fastest way to find out if the mech is bad. However if the circuitry is bad, the
new mech will be damaged. Within 14 mins, you can check the circuitry by following this procedure.
Troubleshooting Concept - Unplug the cable between the mech & main board. Measure the main board voltages. The board is mostly good if the
voltages are OK. Reconnect the cable and re-measure. The mech is bad if the voltages do not agree with the chart. If the voltages do agree with
the chart, the micro (main board) is bad. The procedure begins at right. The chart is on the next page.
1. Unplug the ribbon
cable from socket
CN2011.
2. Measure the
voltage at each of
the CN2011 socket
pins. The voltages
should be identical
to the ones listed
on the next page.
3. Open the front
panel door. Note
which tray is further
inside the unit at
the laser assembly
(see left).

Isolation Procedure:
1. Unplug the ribbon cable at CN2011. Measure the CN2011 connector voltages.
2. Are your actual voltages same as in column B?.
DIFF - the CN6001 cable or main board is at fault. Check main board, pull up resistors and for cracks.
SAME Same voltages means the problem is in the mechanism or its ribbon cable. Continue.
3. Note the position of the trays in the mechanism. Reconnect CN2011.
4. Mech repair - Are your actual voltages same as in columns C, D, or E? Choose the column
that matches tray position or Order a mech (p/n =RD-ddc 027-S).
DIFF the sensors that corresponds to the incorrect voltage is bad. (column F). Replace the entire
assembly or the corresponding sensor.
SAME a mechanism sensors are good and the mech is out of alignment.

5 Disc Mechanism - Concept & Transfer Alignment 1/4
Operational Concept:
There are 2 motors and 8 sensors in the CR-14 mech.
I. Motor 1 - The traverse motor moves:
Laser back & forth
Clamps disc
Pulls trays into the laser assembly
II. Motor 2 - The stocker motor moves:
Tray(s) between the middle stocker
area (fig 2) and out of the assembly
(for disc insertion)
Traverse / laser platform up/dwn,
III. Sensors A tray from the stock area must be
transferred to the laser area for playback.
1) Tray transfer is made after the traverse assembly
elevators to the desired tray level. The following occurs
in the rear traverse assembly:
2) The traverse motor uses arms to pull the tray into gear
#331. [Pictures in the fourth slide 4/4.]
3) SW4 opens (fp 8251) to tell the micro the tray is in.
4) The traverse motor continues to turn, bringing the tray
in, then clamps the disc
5) SW5 opens (fp 8251) at clamp end and sled moves a
little away from home.
6) The sled moves the laser to the approx TOC disc area
& stops. The laser comes on, lens focus searches and if
a disc is found, spins it.
7) SW4 and SW5 are both inside the Traverse assembly.

Dead Set?
I Replace the standby T5751 and / or
the standby IC5799.
II Relay does not click?
Standby supply or micro is not working.
a) If Standby 5V is NOT at H2901/pin 13,
problem is in the standby circuitry.
Use floating ground and measure
feedback voltage at IC5799/pin 2 to
determine if before pin 2 or after.
b) If Standby 5v is present at H2901/pin
13, monitor H2900/pin 6 while
pressing the power on button. Pin 6
goes to 4Vdc? The problem is on the
SMPS board. Pin 6 is 0Vdc? Main
board is suspect.
III Relay clicks?
Main power supply is not working.
a) If no secondary voltages are at
CN5500/pins 1, 3, or 8, check IC5701
start voltage at C5726. No voltage?
Check R5723-24, D5701, relay. At
least 9V? IC5701, IC5801 are
suspect.
b) If secondary voltages at CN5500 are
low, replace Q5863, IC5701 and
IC5801.
c) If the secondary voltages (CN5500)
are normal, main power supply is
working but the problem is an open 1A
display fuse FP2901 at the back of the
SMPS board.
IV No Display? Shuts Off? Check
FP2901, FP2902 on the SMPS board P24.

* F61 error Procedure:
1. Unplug CN2009. (see layout diag.)
2. Turn the unit on. If the unit stays on
(no code), the problem is in the D
amp board. Continue if F61 exists.
3. Remove pin 5 from SMPS board
connector CN2017 and plug
CN2017 back in. (picture next slide)
4. Turn the unit on. If the unit stays
on, the problem is in the SMPS
board. Go to SMPS Bd. Repair.
5. If -30Vdc is missing at D Amp
CN5500/pin 3 or the fan does not
rotate at power on, the SMPS
board is now suspect.
6. If the voltage and fan are both
present, the Main board IC2001 or
pull-up resistors are suspect.
7. Go to the next pages for repairs on
the D Amp or SMPS board.
* F76 error Procedure:
1. Remove CN2017/pin 5 and plug CN2017
back in. No shutdown? Go to the SMPS

Protection - SMPS Board Repair - 3 min diagnostics
SMPS Board Repair Procedure:
1. With CN2017/pin 5 still removed, measure the
voltages at H5801/end pins 1 and 8:
a) Pin 1 or pin 8 is 0Vdc? Open foil path. Resolder.
b) Pin 1 or pin 8 is higher than 13 or 22V (left top)?
Refer to the Power On diagram in this book and
troubleshoot or replace error correction IC5801,
PC5702, Q5863.
c) Pins 1 and 8 are normal at 13V and 22V? PS is
OK. The problem is at the left sensing circuit.
Order & replace zener D5841, and Q5841 on
the SMPS board (shown left).
If those zeners are OK (correct replacements),
there is an open foil or crack in the board
causing the problem. Look for a crack in this
board.
If the unit stays on with CN2017 pin 5
removed, the problem is on the SMPS
board.

Sample Audio Problems Troubleshooting Methods
Audio Troubleshooting Isolation Methods
1. No Speaker Audio Causes (all inputs)
a) Pwr Supply loss check for +30Vdc at CN5500/4, 8. (locate using the layout diagram)
b) No Osc input check for 4.5Vp-p (375kHz) at pin 1 output IC5000-5400. Missing? Replace 5V Zener D5503, osc IC550 & IC5501.
c) Muting check for normal (unmute) voltage. CN2009/pins 12 =0V , 13 =0V, 17 =5V.
d) Muting check for broken headphone jack Sw at CN2007/pin 5 [5V =hp in, 3.5V =hp out]
2. Missing 1 or more channels (remote is needed for rear speaker losses)
a) Spks check for normal 5Vdc at each output IC5000-5400/pin 23 (last pin). [Mute =vol @ 0, HP jack.]
b) Spks check for 4.5Vp-p (375kHz) at each output IC5000-5400/pin 1.
c) Rear - Use the Audio Process diagram lower left instructions to select Multi-Chmusic for rear audio. Then look
for audio at CN2003 (scope). At the rear receiver, change switch to middle SURR position.
3. Hum - Unplug CN2009 and power the unit on.
a) Hum still present? Dampboard problem. The boards gnd should not touch the chassis.
b) Hum gone? SMPS or Main board problem. (Main transformer T5701 if lightning damage)
4. Mute Causes
a) Volume set to 0mutes all audio outputs (front, rear, and headphones).
b) Headphone insertion instructs the micro to mute the front & rear spk output. (Check HP sw- use voltage at CN2007/pin 5)
c) Check the mute voltages at CN2009/pins 17(5V =unmute), pin 13 (0V =unmute), pin 12 (0V =unmute).
d) Unplug the tuner (from the main board) to see if a shorted tuner is killing data communications or clock lines. Unit works without the tuner
module but no AM/FM is displayed when the selector button is pressed.
e) DVD board no communications or its 50 pin cable is defective / damaged.
5. Low volume
Check for Normal signal levels leaving the main board using the audio path diagram (next). Testing - set volume at
maximum (50) without speakers connected. Use any signal source and a scope to monitor.
Refer to the Audio Path (next page) and earlier layout diagrams.

1. RF connection has not been made - Go to the next slide to pair (match) the receiver to the transmitter.
Steps 1-5 are for pairing. Step 6 is to get audio to the rear for final tests.
2. Receiver Defect - Advance 3 slides to troubleshoot the receiver. Make sure there is standby voltage input
the receiver and the pair button is working (pin 9 grounds when the button is pressed.
3. Transmitter Defect - Advance 2 slides to prove the transmitter card Sw +5V voltage is input (main board
CN802/pin 11) and verify data communications is present (CN802/pins 14-16) when the volume control is
rotated.
1. The RF connection is OK but Audio loss or mute is the problem. Hint - Replace the transmitter card if warm/hot
(damaged when plugged in while the unit was powered on).
2. Check for board cracks. Output IC5200 should be warm. Its mute (end) pin 23 should be 5V.
3. Turn on rear sound Press SURROUND button on the remote until MULTI-CHmode appears in the main units display.
This makes the rear surround speaker sound the same as main L & R.
4. Input an audio source (play some music).
5. Disconnect the speakers and turn the volume control to max. (until level number 50 is displayed).
6. Check for audio from the receiver card CN1000/pins 2 & 4. See signal levels at receiver repair.
7. No audio present at CN1000 (receiver)? Troubleshoot the transmitter. Check for audio at the transmitter CN2003/pins 2 &

1. Once an IPOD is docked, the IPOD grounds CN6003/pin 4.
2. Micro IC2001 receives this ground and switches IC6602 on to
deliver 5Vdc from CN6003/pin 8 to charge the IPOD.
1. IPOD models listed above output UART communications when
docked.
2. Micro IC2001 replies so the IPOD can unmute the audio and
video ports. Some IPOD security variations require you to
enable the IPOD video first before docking.
