ADVENTURE PLANET: What fascinates
you about the mountains?
MESSNER: I grew up as the son of a teacher
in a high valley surrounded by mountains.
As kids right after the war we didnt have
any other possibilities in our valley to riot
except skiing in winter or climbing rocks in
summer. There was no swimming pool or
soccer eld. The energy inside me had to
somehow get out and this happened by
skiing and by climbing trees and rocks. I
became very passionate about rock climbing
from an early age on. I developed an instinct
between the age of ve and fteen that laid
the foundation for future extreme
challenges. The challenges evolved from
more difcult to higher to further. And
of course the expectations on myself grew
constantly. I simply found a way of life that
tted me.
ADVENTURE PLANET: You often say
youre more interested in the human
nature than the mountains. Could you
elaborate on this?
MESSNER: The human nature has become
my main focus of interest. Not when I was
in my twenties of course. At that time I
wanted to climb the famous walls that were
considered most difcult back then, like the
Eiger North face or the Ruppal face at
Nanga Parbat. The other mountaineers that
joined me were simply partners to reach a
goal. However, as I grew older, I became
more interested in the human nature. I
learnt a lot about myself and human beings
in the interactions with my partners.
I was rock climber,
mountaineer, pole
and desert traverser
and politician

the young climbing generation. It
is a lot higher than 30 years ago.
This difculty will be combined
with greater exposure in the
future. In the end it always
depends what kind of
technologies you take. I could y
on top of Cerro Torre with a
helicopter as seen in the movie.
But is this still adventure?

ADVENTURE PLANET: Can you
dene the word adventure?
MESSNER: For me, adventure is
to be at the mercy of my own
human limitations. It means, I am
aware of my playing
opportunities. Human beings are
weak animals. We dont have a
thick skin against the cold, we
cant survive for a long period of
time without food and water and
we are slowly. We could never
compete with a monkey in terms
of speed and climbing skills.
However, we are intelligent and
also relatively capable if we take
our experience from the time
when we still lived in cages.
Adventure is to be at
the mercy of my own
human limitations
