Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 2. BUILDING FAMILY AND COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs understand that successful early childhood
education depends upon partnerships with childrens families and communities. They a) know about,
understand, and value the importance and complex characteristics of childrens families and
communities. They use this understanding to b) create respectful, reciprocal relationships that support
and empower families, and c) to involve all families in their childrens development and learning.
(NAEYC, 2010)
Brief Description of Evidence:
While taking ECED 204 Families in Transition during the fall semester of 2013, I worked together with a
small group of other students to create a family and retrieve resources to enable the family to make
healthy family relationships with each other and the community. During the completion of this project
we also involved the families in their childs development and learning by giving resources specifically
for the children. With the family we created, we made partnerships within the families and communities
by giving real resources to help with the families problems. We understood the importance of this family
which is why we worked together to do what we could to help.
Analysis of What I Learned:
During this project I learned how to build respectful reciprocal relationships with families and also with
the other students I worked with that were in the group. I learned how to search for many different
resources in the community and resources that were not in the community but were still helpful. While
listening to additional presentations I also got a chance to learn about the other diverse families and
how they supported and empowered their families, which also helped build reciprocal relationships.
With all of the great resources, we figured how each could support and empower all the diverse
families.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:
I feel confident with my understanding of the importance of families and communities. By completing
this project I am knowledgeable about how to empower families in their time of need while also
involving the childrens development and learning. I believe I have now accomplished the skills I need to
help families deal with crisis in real life situations.
