maintain ties despite
diplomat expulsion
U.S. and Bahrain Ofcials
have been attempting to
tiptoe around last week's
political controversy that led
to the expulsion of a top
American diplomat to the
tiny island in an effort to
preserve their strategic
bilateral relationship.
U.S. Secretary of State
John Kerry contacted
Bahrain's Foreign Minister
Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al
Khalifa over the expulsion.
The two ofcials discussed
Bahrain's position after it
declared Tom Malinowski,
Assistant Secretary of State
for Democracy, Human
Rights and Labor, as a
"persona non grata," which
bans him from entering the
country.
The decision came swiftly
after the U.S. diplomat
during his visit to Bahrain
met with top leaders from
the largest opposition
group, the al-Wefaq
National Islamic Society.
