Transforming students and faculty

Making new and whole-life disciples
who change the world

As the 20
th
century draws to a close, the University is arguably the
single most significant institution in Western Civilization ... more potently
than by any other means, change the University and you change the
world.

Assembly

Harvard has
14,000
Graduate Students

The harvest is plentiful.
The workers are few.
Matt 9:37

Harvard graduate students go on to shape our world:

For most students, however,
questions of God and faith play no part in their development as
leaders. Christian faith, in particular, is often considered to be
irrelevant for students as they pursue their careers. When
Christianity is so frequently dismissed, many Christians at Harvard
find it difficult to connect faith with their chosen field.

The world is an increasingly complex place. Poverty still rules the
lives of most people in the world, while some enjoy unprecedented
wealth. Despite the rapid pace of globalization, people still struggle
to cross racial and cultural divides. Violence abounds as cultures
collide and religion is at the centre of global conflict. Truth and
ethics are increasingly relativized. Secularism continues to grow as
the preferred worldview in the West while other views are often
sidelined.

Mission and Strategy

The absence of Christian
perspectives has diminished
the universitys own
commitment to academic
freedom and to providing
universal education.
Mary Poplin, Professor,
Claremont Graduate
University

In light of this great need, the mission of my ministry with IVCF is
to establish and advance growing communities where students are
challenged to come to faith in Jesus Christ, and to become leaders
in their field by following Jesus Christ with their entire life and
vocation.

Students will be equipped in Spiritual Formation and in Whole
Life Stewardship. With Spiritual Formation I aim to encourage
intimacy with Christ through corporate and personal spiritual
disciplines including transformative Bible study, prayer, and
worship. With Whole Life Stewardship, my ministry is to enable
students to integrate their faith, life, and vocation, recognizing
Jesus as Lord of all, and breaking down the divides between the
sacred and the secular.

The heart of our campus ministry is student leadership
development, which we achieve in five key ways.

New Student Outreach connecting new students
Student led small groups for those who know Jesus and
those who dont
One-on-one development mentoring leaders
Leadership training events, resources, and opportunities
Groups exploring the intersection of faith and vocation

Impact

More than one million men and women shaped by InterVarsity are
serving all over the world. For over 70 years, InterVarsity has helped
students and faculty grow in their love for God, Gods Word, and Gods
purposes in the world.

Pete listened well, provided firm and gentle direction
for my spiritual life, never wearied of exhorting me to
read the Bible and pray, and prayed confidently with me.
Later in the year, I felt called to baptism, and asked Pete
to be my sponsor
Ryland, J.D. Harvard Law School 15

His impact on my own life, and the lives of many
othersparticularly those across religious and
theological lineswas immense. Pete's love for people is
palpable to those who cross his path
Cory, M.T.S. Harvard Divinity School 13

Pete is a charismatic people-person great at working
with all sorts of people, across all sorts of differences,
who holds firmly to what he believes but is willing to
meet people where they are and collaborate wherever
possible. Pete has deeply held convictions and
is unafraid to disagree but is always very respectful of
the beliefs and opinions of others and eager to hear all sides and work
together to take action. As a Universalist Unitarian, I can say that Pete
and I disagree about a lot theologically but he's been an absolute
pleasure to work with and I am honored to have him as a friend; he will
continue to be a source of inspiration to me in interfaith and intercultural
work. Chris, President of HDS Student Association 2013-14

Pete was a constant source of encouragement to me as I
was navigating the difficult waters of staying committed
to belief in salvation through Christ alone while
exploring different theological perspectives. It often felt
like I was I was grasping at a truth that was slipping
away from me. Pete joyfully and unapologetically
brought it back to the Truth of Christ alone and talks
with him kept me anchored in God in the midst of academia. I was always
so impressed with how he was able to graciously engage other religious
traditions while also clearly and consistently proclaiming his faith in
Christ. Anna, M.T.S. Harvard Divinity School 13
If I were fully funded, over
the next three years, I could
be reaching 150 students with
the Gospel. Thats double the
size of the median-sized
church in the USA!
*
I would
achieve this in various ways
including by developing and
supporting twenty small
groups with well-equipped
leaders across different
graduate schools.

Pete grew up in New Zealand,
where at age eleven he chose to
make his entire life center on Jesus
Christ. He completed a B.Sc. in
Physics and a B.Theol. in Biblical
Studies at the University of Otago.
He has worked as a Student Pastor
and High School Teacher before
coming to Harvard Divinity
School to complete an M.Div.,
with which he graduated in May
2014. He has always harbored a
passion for Biblical Studies,
Biblical languages, science, and
proclaiming the Gospel.
In August 2014, Pete married his wife Kelly, a tax lawyer who is
an alum of Boston Universitys Law Christian Fellowship. They
met at an InterVarsity retreat in 2012, and live in a beautiful loft in
Jamaica Plain.
