Citizenship
I will be volunteering with Youth Development Initiatives (YDI). I will be
particularly working with the L.A.M.P program. This is a program that serves at-risk
youth from 14 17 years old with life skills mentoring. Through mentoring this program
encourages youth to avoid criminal activities and other negative situations by helping
them build their self-esteem, embrace personal responsibility, and improve decision-
making skills. My supervisor will be Jordan Starck and his contact (cell) (301) 655-7052
(email) jstarck@ydiinc.org. I will be meeting with students every Tuesday form 3:00pm
until about 6:00 pm. I will be assigned mentees; I will also be given activities to do with
them that will work on their self esteem, responsibility, and decision-making. I will also
help them do career research, form an rsum, interview skills, and financial literacy. I
chose to volunteer with this organization because it relates to my career goals of being a
family or juvenile lawyer or social worker. Also I enjoy working with inner city youth
particularly those who have been placed in unfortunate situation that they cannot control
(rape, drugs, abuse, ect.) This organization, my task, and responsibilities connect to
citizenship through taking youth that are on the verge of being a hindrance to society and
being bad citizens and giving them different morals and something to work toward. This
organization provides them with the key aspects needed to succeed in society and be and
activate citizens.
