Fossils Imprints
I.Objectives
Create simple imprint using plaster of paris
Describe the formation of imprints
Discuss how imprints prove the existence of the first living organism
II. Materials
Lump of modeling clay, table knife , cup (63g) of plaster of paris ,1/4 cup (59ml of water), two
paper cups, button should be two to three inches (five to seven cm) in diameter , spoon, well-
fpormed seashell, chicken bone , leaves, or other natural item
III. Procedures
1. Make a ball of clay (preferabely as big your fist).
2. Flatten the clay until it is one inch thick. Smoothen the upper portion of the clay.
3. Cut or trim the flattened clay until it fits to the button of one cup.
4. Adhere the clay firmly into the button of the cup, flat side up.
5. Carefully press any of the following materials: seashells, chicken bone, leaves, or the other
natural items unto the clay until it s half buried.
6. Carefully lift the material from the clay.
7. Pour cup of plaster of paris in another paper cup. Add cup of water then stire
continuously until smooth consistency is achieve. Leave it for 5 mins.
8. Pour the thickened plaster of paris. Be careful not to make spills . Leave it for 1 hr.
9. Carefully tear the sides of the paper cup. Separate the clay and olaster from each other.
10. Carefully smoothen the side of the plaster using the table knife.dry it for 1 to 2 days.
IV. Results and Observations
1. Illustrate the appearance of your imprint in the box.
