An activity most adults enjoy is Two Truths and a Lie. Give them
a little time to think, coming up with two things that are true
about themselves and one lie. The other participants must try to
guess which one is a lie. So, Martha might say: "I'm originally
from Oregon. I have a goldfish called Freddy. I once swallowed
fire."
If you want to get them moving, out of their seats and mixing a
little, have them line up in order of birth month or height or
alphabetically by first name. Or try dividing the room with an
imaginary diagonal line and have them stand on it to show what
their opinion, feeling is about a subject. So, for example, the
people who believe they are extroverts stand at one end, the
introverts stand at the other, and the not sures spread themselves
along the line according to what they believe.
Hand out a paper you've made up. The heading is Find Someone
Who. It is a grid of say nine squares, each containing an item such
as "shops at the same supermarket as you", "is younger than you",
"shares your birth month", "loves the same TV show" etc. Set a
time limit and allow participants to mingle, attempting to write a
different person's name inside each square.
I've used these with success in various classes. They work well
when the group doesn't know each other yet. You can choose
games that are a little more confronting as participants are more
comfortable.
