Conroy-Sponsored Law Expands Access to
Epi-Pens in Schools

VILLA PARK, Ill. A new state law co-sponsored by state Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park)
will expand access to life-saving treatment for children with severe allergies.

More children are developing food and environmental allergies, and it is critical for medication
to be easily accessible and administered safely and quickly, said Conroy. Many children and
their parents may not even be aware of an allergy. This law will help our children when every
second counts.

The new law allows school employees, teachers and volunteers to be trained and permitted to
administer EpiPen (epinephrine) injections to students experiencing severe, life-threatening
allergic reactions. Currently, only school nurses can administer epinephrine injections, a problem
for a growing number of schools lacking a full-time school nurse.

As a parent, I know how frightening it is when your child faces a medical emergency, Conroy
said. Giving trained school personnel the ability to give students life-saving medication in an
emergency should help give parents the peace of mind that their kids will be safe at school.
