Aim of the program:

To assist students in becoming fluent and legible writers and transferring the skills and strategies taught to writing in other subject
areas.

Year 1: Write using unjoined lower case and upper case
letters
Year 2: Write legibly and with growing fluency using
unjoined upper case and lower case letters

Frequent, detailed and specific statements are provided to the students
about the quality of the work required throughout task completion and
during reflection on their finished work.

Most students, most of the time, are seriously engaged in the lesson or

Indicators
Uses correct pencil grip and maintains correct body position
Forms most letters of the alphabet correctly and appropriately
Tries to write clearly in straight lines, from left to right, using letters to uniform size, shape, slope and spacing
Uses lower and upper case letters of consistent size and formation in NSW Foundation Style
Writes letters in proportion to each other
Uses finger movements to control the pencil while sliding forearm across the page

Suggested Formative Assessment Strategies
2 Stars and a Target

Feedback symbols for use in feedback for teachers, peers and self -reporting. The stars are drawn
next to improvements and good work. The target symbol is drawn next to one or two areas that the
student needs to focus on for more improvement.

I Can Statements Students self-evaluate their handwriting by making oral statements about their abilities.

Peer Assessment Students ask their peers to underline best examples of a specific handwriting focus e.g. best speed
join, most fluent sentence etc.

Report Back Students make statement about what they have learned and how they can improve

Evaluation: This lesson was taught by Mrs Norman during RFF. The students were provided with a worksheet that helps them
develop the fluent movement for the letter a. The students then had to trace over the pre-written text in handwriting book.
