Coalitions in Action:
Eagle River Youth Coalition Fights
Back Against Impaired Driving
Recognition by: CADCA

The Eagle River Youth Coalition, located in Avon, Colo., a close-
knit rural town west of Vail, is fighting back against a trend of
impaired driving.

Executive Director Michelle Hartel Stecher explained that the
coalition was alerted to the problem after noticing some disturbing
trends in data via the annual Healthy Kids Colorado Survey, which
sites youth behavioral data as well as local police, courts and media.

The data revealed that a high percentage of teens admitted to never
or rarely wearing a seatbelt; riding with a driver who had been
drinking and texting or emailing while driving a car or other vehicle,
among other dangerous behaviors.

Youth Leader Spotlight:
Kaylie Evans

Living in the Vail Valley we quickly learn that most people come
here to consume our beautiful and pristine mountain playground,
and as quickly as they come, they're gone. But, how can we blame
them for taking advantage of the mountains when most of us came
here for the same thing. As tourists, even in our own towns, we
forget the impact we're making on the people and environment
around us.

Kaylie Evans, a Junior at Vail Mountain School (VMS), is aware of
this impact and has seen first-hand the valley's underlying issues
despite the happy-go-lucky feel. "Some people are not as fortunate
living in this valley and [people] need to realize that you need to
lend a helping hand," says Evans. Attending VMS, students are
highly encouraged to get involved with serving others, so Evans has
already been involved with several projects and programs
including; Youth Leaders Council, International Peer Mentorship
Program, Kids Car Club, Humane Society, and MLK Jr. Day. Her
family is also very charitable and has all helped with Salvation
Army's Adopt a Family as well as sponsoring several events
including the only kickball tournament & benefit where you get a
big ol' pile of flapjacks. Outside of volunteering, Evans is pretty
active with volleyball, water sports, reading and loves being around
people.

A Fond Farewell

That's right, ERYC's very own marketing whiz kid, Drew Kartos, will be
leaving the team this month as his Americorps term ends. Although, he won't
be going too far and will actually be joining the Bright Future Foundation right
next door as their Violence Prevention Specialist. With a Master's in Public
Health and a thesis on violence prevention, this fit couldn't be any better. While
ERYC is losing an asset, the impact of Drew's work will carry on. Some of his
work included: the coordination of several events, trainings & initiatives,
expansion of the ERYC marketing presence and development of a strategic
marketing plan that will help sustain ERYC's marketing efforts. Now you can
follow Drew at the Bright Future Foundation and his work with violence
prevention and the Buddy Mentors Program.

Put More on Your Plate

It comes with great excitement to announce that the Edwards Farmers
Market will be accepting food assistance/food stamps/SNAP for eligible
food purchases. Plus, food stamps will be DOUBLED in value through the
double token program.

Here is how it works:
Visit the Estoy Sano booth to swipe Colorado Quest Card/EBT Card for a
specified amount. In exchange, receive DOUBLE the amount of tokens (up
to $20) to spend on eligible food items at the market. For example, if
someone swipes their Colorado Quest card for $5, they will receive $10 in
market tokens to spend. The tokens work like cash, though no change can
be given. Unused tokens can be saved for use at future markets. Only
SNAP/food stamps are eligible for this program.
