Group Project Part 5

1. Level of Significance: ! = 0.05
2. Claim: The population proportion of individuals, being tested, that are male is equal to
47.76%.
H0: p= 0.4776
H1: p" 0.4776
= 0.4776 = 0.5429 = 0.5224 = 35
Hypothesis test results:
p : Proportion of successes
H0 : p = 0.4776
HA : p " 0.4776

-value = 0.4396

The -value is greater than the significance level of ! = 0.05, therefore we fail to reject the
null hypothesis (H0). Because we fail to reject the null hypothesis, H0: = 0.4776, we fail
to reject the claim that 47.76% of the individuals being tested are male. We conclude that
there is not sufficient evidence to warrant rejection of the claim that 47.76% of the
individuals being tested are male.

3. Claim: The population mean, for the ending BMI, is equal to 22.484.
H0: = 22.484
H1: " 22.484
= 23.487 = 22.484 = 3.903 = 35

H0 : = 22.484
H1 : " 22.484

-value = 0.1378

The P-value is greater than the significance level of ! = 0.05, therefore we fail to reject
the null hypothesis (H0). Because we fail to reject the null hypothesis, H0: = 22.484, we
fail to reject the claim that the mean ending BMI is equal to 22.484. We conclude that
there is not sufficient evidence to warrant rejection of the claim that the mean of the
ending BMI is 22.484.

4. Both of the tests were completed using data sets that were simple random samples. Each
data set contained a sample size of 35 which is sufficient to complete the hypothesis test
in both cases. In addition, both cases satisfy a binomial distribution.
a) Using the hypothesis test for population proportion requires that np 5 and nq 5.
This is satisfied in this test as n = 35, p = 0.5, and q = 0.5.
b) Using the hypothesis test for population mean requires that is either known or no
known and that n > 30. The major requirement being the n > 30.
