Parkes locals, Lou
and Beck Auld have at-
tended their first recre-
ation day in Orange as
new members of the
cancer support group,
CanTeen.
CanTeen is an or-
ganisation that supports
youths between the
ages of 12 and 24 deal-
ing with the battles of
cancer.
CanTeen is there to
offer support and assis-
tance to teenagers with
cancer as well as sib-
lings or parents who
have been diagnosed
with the disease.
Almost 20 per cent
of CanTeen members
are located in regional
areas.
The girls attended
their first outing with
the group gathering at
the Orange Tenpin
Bowl to socialise and
forget about cancer for
a day.
For Lou and Beck
joining the organisation
was a cause close to
their heart, as their
mother Lynne was di-
agnosed with Thyroid
cancer in 2009.
This year the cancer
developed into Metasta-
tic Thyroid Cancer
spreading to her lungs
and Spine.
Over the last five
years Lynne has under-
gone various opera-
tions, treatments and
therapies to contain the
cancer cells.
For the girls, becom-
ing members of Can-
Teen is an important
initiative to help them
cope with their
mothers condition.
Lou said they joined
CanTeen at the begin-
ning of the year.
Thats when we
found it hardest to com-
prehend and deal with
mums cancer, Lou
said.
It was a hard time
for not only mum but
the whole family.
CanTeen was a
place that offered sup-
port and guidance for
us to understand what
was happening in our
lives and also all the
medical terms and pro-
cedures mum was
going through.
The CanTeen staff
has been very support-
ive since joining; they
have offered support
for everything includ-
ing work, school and
counselling services.
Lou said the recre-
ation day was a lot of
fun and allowed for a
much needed distrac-
tion for both her and
her sister.
The girls are look-
ing forward to the
camps that are coming
up later in the year, as
well as meeting other
members in the Sydney
and Central NSW divi-
sion of CanTeen.
Anyone interested
in becoming a member
or donating to the char-
ity should contact Can-
Teen via their website
www.canteen.org.au.

Family and Community Services
Minister Gabrielle Upton has
launched Link2home, a single,
statewide telephone information and
referral service to assist the homeless
and those at risk of homelessness.
Minister Upton said the Govern-
ment has invested $4.5 million in the
new Link2home telephone line, as
part of the $515 million package an-
nounced last month to tackle home-
lessness at its source.
From today, we have a statewide
phone service that can provide infor-
mation about local homelessness
services, assess what people need
and refer them to appropriate spe-
cialist services, Ms Upton said.
The 24/7 service is available
every day of the year and brings to-
gether three separate phone services,
making it easier for clients to access
the right service at the right time.
The days of having to navigate a
confusing maze of advice are now
over thanks to Link2home. Clients
will only need to tell their story
once.
Minister Upton said Link2home
would help at-risk groups such as
women, young people, Aboriginal
people, and those from culturally and
linguistically diverse backgrounds.
This initiative is part of the Gov-
ernments broader strategy of pro-
viding linked-in early intervention
services to avert homelessness be-
fore it becomes a crisis for individu-
als or families, she said,
We are wrapping integrated
services around those at risk of
homelessness, before they are at cri-
sis level, before they are sleeping
rough on our streets.
People who are homeless or who
may be at risk of homelessness can
get help from the Link2home tele-
phone service by calling 1800 152
152.

storm of delicious food for you.
Last years Soup and Sweets Day was very pop-
ular.
The Parkes Branch of Can Assist is very com-
mitted to raising funds to financially assist families
in Parkes and the district who have been affected by
cancer.
Last year, around $100,000 was used to assist
those families in need.
So you can see the need is great.
Anyone wishing to become a member of Can As-
sist or help with fund raising is welcomed with open
arms and can contact the President, Narelle Schulze,
