Introduction

As a pre-service teacher and co-planner of this camp, it is fitting I provide the

background and setting for our journey to Torquay.

This camp is based from the school Ive had placement at this year.
Boort District School is a p-12 school in a remote/rural town containing only
about 220 students.
My fictional Golden State Primary School has the same circumstances.
This camp will see 2 teachers and a pre-service teacher (me) take 36 Grade 5/6
students to Torquay for water sports and recreational activities.

This camp is based on the country outlook and criteria.
The following Camp Portfolio will contain evidence of how a rural country town
plan and portray their camps. The following will include how a country school
and staff plan camps, as I was part of the integral planning throughout my
placement.

This camp will have my full outlook and ideas for a smoothly run and enjoyable
experience, in what some country students may never experience, the beach
and coast environments.

Yours truly,

Camp planner and pre-service teacher
Ryan McGhie

Purpose

There are many benefits students will gain from the camps experience,
These include- peer bonding
- team work
- learning new skills
- development of skills they already have
- develop a higher self-esteem
- independence and responsibility
- leadership skills
- a sense of adventure
- appreciation of the environment
- participation in a physical lifestyle and recreational activities
- developing new experiences and life skills
- understanding of water/marine environments and how to react to dangers
- fulfilling and making new relationships
- goal setting
- encouragement and enjoyment
- life experience

Transport

Because of the remoteness of the town Boort,
the primary school already uses Bus charters to
deliver the children home to farms a fair
journey away from the school.
Therefore, the relationship between the school
and Whitmores Bus Lines is exceptional and
because of this relationship we have booked in
our travels with them.
Whitmores Bus Lines will be taking all 39 of us
from Wednesday to Friday and stay on-site.

The Camp will take place in the final 3 days of Summer.
The weather forecast above was for the 26
th
, 27
th
and 28
th
of February passed.
Weather and conditions should be excellent for water sports and environments during these
three days.

Sunscreen will be supplied and Slip, Slop, Slap will be enforced.
The wetsuits will cover majority of the body also, so sunburn wont be a major concern in
the water.

Communication
Teachers will have mobile phones on them at all times. They can contact the school if an
emergency occurs, or anyone else who needs to be issued.
Outside of school hours, The Principle will be on call or have their mobile on them at all
times in case a call comes through, they will then contact parents if need be.
The camp site also has a telephone which they can use in case of emergency.
Further in the package, there will be a risk management page, where all important numbers
and necessities are listed

Supervision
At all times, during activities especially, students will be supervised heavily to prevent any
injury, harm or behavioural difficulties.
During the water based activities, teachers will set out strict guidelines and rules to be
followed responsibly. Also during the activities there will be professional instructors with
certified certificates in first aid, lifesaving and surf/snorkelling instructing.
Depending on schedule, there may also be the local lifesaving guards and their coloured
flags to obey and stay in between.

Equipment
The equipment used will all be catered by Westcoast Adventure, Outdoor Environment
including the snorkelling gear, surfing wetsuits, longboards and surf instructors/lifeguards as
well.
We are only bringing a First Aid Kit, cooking utensils, food and supper, and a bag of
equipment for activities, if needed.

Environment
The overall environment, can and will be dangerous if not careful at all times throughout the
duration of this camp.
- Snorkelling: This activity of course is dangerous because its water based and depends a lot
on environment and actions. The danger is taken out of this activity because the
professional Westcoast Adventure, Outdoor Environment instructors are in charge. They
are professional and have the highest accreditation possible in dealing with water
environments and students.
- Surfing: Same goes for this activity the Westcoast Adventure, Outdoor Environment are
responsible for rules, regulations and actions that are partaken in their waters.

While these activities are running, there will also be the Surf/Lifesaving Club operating on
the more popular surf, swim beaches which are a very handy set of eyes towards safety and
any dangers or warnings.

- Adventure Park: The adventure park is probably the most difficult to bare as a teacher in
forms of control and awareness. Although the park has its own staff and security, the
students will be free to do what they like, so boundaries and time limits must be set, and a
central destination for a common meeting ground must be set as well. These rules must be
concrete, so students do not get left behind, or lost. Perhaps meet back every 2 hours at the
meeting point, settle, get a drink and recharge for the last stint before we depart form the
meeting point once again.
-Torquay beach and accommodation: Students must remember theyre not alone and must
respect the environment at all times and others around them using the public space also.
Obey all rules and instructions set by councils, parks, accommodations and all teachers,
instructors/lifeguards.

Activities
-Snorkelling: This activity will take part at Bateman Bay
with the professional team from Westcoast Adventure,
Outdoor Adventure.

-Walk along the
beach: Depending on weather we will go
for a casual relaxing walk along the
beach after a big day of strenuous
activities. This time will be to wind
down, appreciate the raw and relaxing
atmosphere of the coastal environment.

-Surfing: This activity is another run by the
professional and enjoyable Westcoast Adventure,
Outdoor Adventure. This will take part at the best
beach available, depending closer to the date.

-Adventure
Park: Will consist of the whole
afternoon enjoying the adventure park
in Geelong and what it has to offer.
Students will experience a range of
different activities and enjoyable thrills.
-Free Time and Other Activities: This time will consist of playing around the
Torquay holiday park in their specialised facilities with gaming areas and
recreational purposes.
- Pool, Spa - Camp Kitchen/BBQ area
- Jumping Pillow - Outdoor Theatre
- Foos Ball, Air Hockey, Mini Golf, Tennis - Internet Kiosk
- Playground - Animal Farm/Kids Club
