Important Information for Students

The criteria each task relates to are shown against that task where possible.

Please note that plagiarism is treated as a serious offence and therefore the work you
produce must be individual and original although may work in groups in some
instances (Please refer to Student Handbook on Plagiarism & Cheating).

All sources of information must be referenced using Harvard referencing where a

Please note that the submission date given for this assignment is the final date that you
can hand over the assignment. A one week grace period maybe extended with prior
approval from the Program Manager Undergraduate. However, note that
submissions handed in one week late will be graded lower (Please refer to the Student
Handbook on Assessments - Late Submissions & Penalties).

Assignments returned to students for re-working must be re-submitted within 10 days
(Please refer to Student Handbook on Assignments Re-submission).

Failure to re-submit the previously marked assignment with the re-submitted
assignment will mean that results cannot be released for the respective unit.

Please read, follow and reference both the contents of the unit outline and the grading
criteria of the assignment before completing this assignment.

Lab- Assignment 2 This assignment assesses Outcomes 4 and 5 by determination of
primary design properties of soils from common soil tests

Scenario

Determination of primary design parameters of soils for a given task using common soil tests is a
compulsory task expected from civil engineers. This assignment allows you to analyze common
soil tests and to determine design parameters.

To achieve the assessment criteria for pass (P4 and P5) you must demonstrate the ability to:
Explain the measurement of shear strength under undrained and drained conditions
Describe the use and limitations of one dimensional consolidation
Describe the laboratory measurement of soil permeability and its limitations
Obtain and process laboratory data for the measurement of strength, compressibility and
permeability to current codes of practice (you may refer BS and ASTM)
Produce a laboratory report and interpret test results obtained

This can be achieved by completing the following tasks and submitting your solutions in a neat
well-presented manner.

Tasks
You will be asked to participate in conducting laboratory experiments at soil mechanics lab of
Open University o Sri Lanka. You are required to answer the following questions and answers
should be submitted as a report. You may refer additional reading material. Further, you will be
given some assistance to solve the given problems during the laboratory hours.

1: Conduct Triaxial test and direct shear test and explain the measurement of shear strength
under undrained and drained conditions (P4.1)
2: Conduct 1-D consolidation test and describe the use and limitations (P4.2)
3: Conduct constant head and falling head tests and explain the limitations (P4.3)
4: Compare the tests done at the lab with BS and ASTM codes (P5.1)
5: Produce a laboratory report and interpret test results obtained (p5.2)
