Mulayam Singh Yadav, head of the Samajwadi Party, remarked that he would be willing to form an alliance with Mayawati and the BSP if Lalu Prasad could convince her. This comment was in response to Lalu urging Mulayam and Mayawati to unite against the rising BJP. However, both the SP and BSP later dismissed speculation of them joining forces, despite both parties losing badly to the BJP in the recent national elections. In the past, the SP and BSP have worked together, forming a joint government in 1993.

The coming together of two Ms of Uttar Pradesh -Mulayam Singh Yadav and Mayawatigrabbed headlines for most part of the day but by late evening was dismissed by both sides as mere speculation. It started with Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's off the cuff remark that he was willing to join hands with Mayawati if the Rashtriya Janat Dal chief Lalu Prasad could convince her. He was making a remark on Laloo's repeated statements exhorting both the UP leaders to come together to take on a resurgent BJP . While sharing the stage with his arch rival turned foe former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday , Laloo had said that like he had come together with Nitsih to take on BJP, Mulayam and Mayawati too should join hands. Previously too he had spoken about it on sev eral occasions. Samajwadi Party leaders said that Mulayam was tauntingat Laloo's constant remarks that he join hands with Mayawati. When pressed by reporters in New Delhi on Wednesday he said If Lalu manages to hold her by the hand and bring her to me I am willing to align with the BSP. This triggered a flurry of speculation of the coming together of the two arch rivals in the battle ground of Uttar Pradesh. Both the SP and BSP received a drubbing at the hands of the BJP in the recent Lok Sabha polls. While the BJP bagged 71 seats and 2 went to its ally Apna Dal, the ruling Samajwadi Party could only hold on to 5 seats of the 80 in the state. The worst f ate was that of Mayawati's BSP . It was wiped out from the entire state failing to win a single seat. Many speculated about the coming together of the SP and BSP in the days to come to take on the BJP wave. The SP and BSP have been allies in the past forming a joint government in 1993.
