copy of it to keep with your Finale information.
This file contains important information about Finale 2006 not included in the User Manual as well as
information about converting older files into the new version's format. Please note that Finale 2006 files
cannot be opened in previous versions of Finale.
This document is organized by each version's changes; those of you already familiar with earlier versions

!nstalling Finale 2006 on Windows 2000&'(
If any pre0ious 0ersion of Finale has %een installed on the $achine- Finale 2006
reco$$ends that you restart your co$puter and log on as 3yste$ !d$inistrator
%efore installing on Windows 2000*,P syste$s1 his will pre0ent erroneous font
warnings1
We reco$$end that you install Finale- and any other software- when logged in as
3yste$ !d$inistrator1
If you encounter pro%le$s during installation- we reco$$end that you turn o8 any
progra$s running in the %ac&ground- as 0irus detectors can often pre0ent Finale fro$
installing necessary 4les and updating the registry1 Rest assured- your Finale C9 does
not contain any 0iruses1 o turn o8 all progra$s running in the %ac&ground# Press
Ctrl:!lt:9elete once to %ring up the Close Progra$ dialog %o21 ;In Windows 2000 or
,P- press Ctrl:!lt:9elete- then clic& on as& Manager1< his lists e0ery process that is

Registering Finale 2006
he 4rst ti$e you launch Finale- you will %e pro$pted to register1 o register a single
copy of Finale- clic& Register "ow! to open the Registration Wi>ard ;or- fro$ the ?elp
Menu- choose Register Finale<1 hen follow the instructions to register your copy of
Finale 0ia the Internet- phone- or $ail1 If you choose not to register- you will %e
pro$pted to do so each ti$e you launch Finale1 If you do not register within thirty
days- printing and sa0ing are disa%led until you choose to register1
Note that the User/Authorization Codes are computer specific, and will only work on the given computer
installation. Verify that the correct serial number has been entered. If you make a change to the computer
(such as replacing the hard drive or motherboard, or install a new operating system), then you will need to
re-authorized the installation. If you have already installed and authorized twice, you will need to contact
Customer Service directly by phone, FAX or standard mail with your serial number and the location ID for
the specific installation in question, and one of our representatives can clear the previous authorization
from your account. If the software is not "reminding" you to register when you run the program, then the
registration/authorization has been successfully completed.
Registering )ontakt for Finale with *arritan (ersonal +rhestra
To register Kontakt for Finale with Garritan Personal Orchestra, on your hard drive, navigate to the
Program Files/Native Instruments/Finale GPO folder and double-click the Registration Tool. Follow the
on-screen instructions to register. Like Finale, you can register Kontakt for Finale with Garritan Personal
Orchestra on up to two computers.

Con5erting Finale 2005 6and earlier7 dou$ents into Finale 2006 dou$ents
Finale 2006 has a di8erent 4le for$at than earlier 0ersions- and con0erts older 4les to
the new format when you open them in Finale 2006. You should be aware of the following points:
+pening old dou$ents
Finale 2006 will open and con0ert older 0ersions@ docu$ents- gi0ing the$ the default
title "UNTITLED.MUS." We recommend saving a newly converted document with a different name than
the original file, keeping the older unconverted file as a backup. If you do want to save the file using the
same name, choose Save As from the File menu. Finale displays the original file name, so you can click
OK to rewrite over the old file.
Running older 5ersions of Finale
Finale 200. ;and earlier 0ersions< for Windows or Macintosh cannot open any
standard Finale 2006 4le1 o open a Finale 2006 docu$ent in an earlier 0ersion- sa0e
the 4le in Music,MB for$at and then open the Music,MB 4le using the Music,MB
I$port plug:in1 Finale for Windows includes the Music,MB i$porter %ac& to 0ersion
200I- and then %ac& to 2000 using software a0aila%le separately1 Finale for Macintosh

1ew Features in Finale 2006
Studio View. Page View is your print shop for layout like Studio View is your sound stage for
playback. Use this new view to audition Finales MII perfor!ance" #conduct# a te!po" record a
$yperScribe transcription" and !ore.
Mi%er &ontrols. &ontrol the volu!e" panning" and reverb for your full score" and find the perfect
balance using convenient sliders and knobs for each staff ' all in real'ti!e during playback. See Mi%er.
(lso" use the Staff &ontrols to ad)ust these settings which appear conveniently to the left of each staff
in Finales new Studio View.
*e!po*ap. Studio Views new *e!po*ap staff allows you to #conduct# your score by tapping with a
MII device or your co!puter keyboard. +our te!po is recorded and applied to playback. *he beat
durations can also be edited to opti!i,e accuracy while recording a te!po.
-ew Instru!ent .ist &ontrols. (s part of Finales real'ti!e playback enhance!ents you can now
audition real'ti!e changes to volu!e" panning" and instru!ents with controls added to the instru!ent
list.
/ontakt for Finale with 0arritan Personal 1rchestra. (ssign 0P1s world class instru!ent sounds to
staves of a new docu!ent with the Setup 2i,ard. 1r" load 0P1 instru!ents for use with e%isting
staves using the /ontakt Player for Finale with 0P1.
(!biance 3everb. &usto!i,e the roo! si,e" decay" and a collection other reverb settings that allow
you to control of the overall reverb effect of playback. See 0arritan (!biance dialog bo%.
Speedier Playback Processing. 2ithout the need to prescan your !usic" a click on the Play button
initiates playback with al!ost no hesitation. 1nly $u!an Playback processing is neccessary 4if $P is
enabled5.
Export a Measure Region as a MIDI or Audio File with a new command in the Playback Settings
dialog box.

6nhanced Perfor!ance. 1pti!i,ed drawing routines and !e!ory handling now provide

More &ontrol over Measure -u!bering. Its now easy to instruct Finale to skip a
!easure in a !easure nu!ber se7uence. -o co!ple% *i!e Signature or Measure *ool
ad)ust!ents re7uired ' )ust uncheck Include in Measure -u!bering.
isplay in &oncert Pitch 2arning. If you choose to print parts for your brass 7uintet in
concert pitch" Finale now re!inds you the !usic is not prepared for transposing
instru!ents.
&reate a :ells Used &hart (uto!atically with the new &reate $andbells Used &hart
Plug'in. *his plug'in scans your handbell score for all bells used and generates a chart at
the top of your score.
(uto'generate &hord Sy!bols with the &hord (nalysis Plug'in. *his plug'in analy,es the
har!onic progression of a selected region of your score and adds chord sy!bols
auto!atically.
(ll'Staff (nalysis. Include notes fro! all staves of your score while adding chords using
the staff analysis !ethod.

Place Slurs on Melis!atic Passages (uto!atically with the (uto Slur Melis!as Plug'in.
*his plug'in can find !ultiple notes over a syllable and place slurs accordingly.

It is now possible to access the electronic PF version of the Installation and *utorials

Finale no longer uses ?@AB of the &PU ti!e when it is in the background if the
S!artMusic SoftSynth is selectecd as the the MII 1ut device and the synth has been
used to produce a sound 4i.e. clicking in a note in Si!ple 6ntry.5
Playback
Finale now supports playback as a slave device during Midi Sync.

o -otes with tre!olos" when tied together" are no longer rearticulated.
o Pitch bend glisses now e%tend to the destination note.
o $u!an PlaybackC &rescendos interrupted by rests are now interpreted
properly.
o 2hen a grace note is tied to a subse7uent note in percussion notation" both
notes are now articulated during playback.
o *he default value of the MII velocity for the grace notes is now D@ ticks
less than the funda!ental. (lso" the grace note playback duration has
been set to around E@ for fla!s to be properly interpreted.
o *rills will now sound as an aug!ented Dnd when they should.
o Unchecking ;3itardando :efore< in the Fer!ata section of the $u!an
Playback Preferences no longer disables rit. and accel.
o 3itardandi and accelerandi that appear on the first beat as a !easure
e%pression are now interpreted when directly above the first beat of the
first !easure.
o *urning off fer!atas for a section no longer produces choppy" non'slurred
playback.
o If an e%pression of type sf," fp" or grupetto" is placed as !easure
e%pression" it is now interpreted.
Printing
