Music and Social Justice; Emerging Approaches in Applied Music Research

This course will address emerging experiments in the way academics and non-academic
subjects collaborate in joint music research initiaties to produce !nowledge and actions
which may be releant to the reersal o" patterns o" social injustice# iolence# exclusion
and domination present in so many contemporary societies$ %articipants will read and
discuss examples o" interdisciplinary theoretical and methodological approaches# such
as "ound in the literature on collaboratie# adocacy# engaged and applied research# with
emphasis on the participatory action-research principles drawn "rom &rlando 'als (orda
and %aulo 'reire# as well as speci"ic case studies in (ra)il# *atin America and
elsewhere$ &ne o" the aspects to be highlighted is how !nowledge can be produced non-
hierarchically out o" concrete participatory strategies deeloped between distinct social
subjects such as undergraduate and graduate students# academic researchers# non-
academic musicians and non-musicians interested in music$
