Du'aa al-Qunoot

Supplicating to Allaah (swt) and seeking his forgiveness and mercy is a

duty upon every Muslim and is descri!ed in numerous ahaadeeth (sayings
of the "rophet #saw$) to !e the weapon of the !eliever and '%he &orship'
as it is a ritual act in 'slaam which if o(ered to anything other than Allaah
will take one outside the fold of 'slaam)
%he messenger Muhammad (saw) used to recite Du'aa al-Qunoot during
Salaat ul-*a+r &itr and sometimes during other prayers throughout the
year) 't is one of those Sunnah's ("rophetic traditions) which unfortunately
today has !een deserted !y many Muslims despite the fact that he would
make Qunoot regularly and almost on a daily !asis) 'n fact it is *ard al-
,ifaayah (su-cient duty) to !e o(ered in Salaat ul-*a+r in .amaa'ah (at the
Mas+id) from time to time (not every single Salaah)) And it is recommended
to recite in the &itr Salaah)
't has !een narrated in A!ou Daawud that the messenger of Allaah (saw)
used to recite al-Qunoot whenever he wanted to supplicate against
someone (for their destruction) or for someone (the Mu+aahideen and
sincere Muslims)) /e would perform the Qunoot in the last 0ik'ah of the
Salaah after performing 0ukoo' and saying 'Sami'allaahu liman hamidah
Allaah listens to those who praise him'1 then raise his hands (whilst still
focusing on the place of Su+ood) and supplicate the Qunoot aloud after
which he would then make Su+ood and conclude the prayer)
Qunoot has many linguistic meanings such as humility o!edience and
devotion) /owever it is more understood to !e a special du'aa
(supplication) which is recited during the prayer which should only !e done
in the Ara!ic language) 2elow is the Qunoot which the messenger of Allaah
(saw) used to recite in his prayer) 't is important to note that there are
many di(erent versions of this du'aa (di(erent narrations) all of which are
Saheeh (authentic) and either of them would do) &e have also included
(ne3t to the transliteration) what to say after the 'maam (if praying in
congregation) in order to interact with the du'aa)

Allaahummahdinaa feeman hadait (Aameen),
Wa 'aafnaa feeman 'aafait (Aameen),
Watawallanaa feeman tawallait (Aameen),
Wabaarik lanallaahumma feemaa a'atait (Aameen),
Waqinaa wasrif 'annaa bi-fadlika sharra maa qadait
(Aameen),
a-innaka taqdie bil-!aqqi walaa "uqdaa 'alaik
(!aqqaa),
Wa-innahu laa "adhillu man waalait, walaa "a'i##u man
'aadait (!aqqaa),
$abaarakta rabbanaa wata'aalait (%aa Allaah),
&akal-hamdu 'alaa maa qadait (al-!amdulillaah),
'astaghfruk-allaahumma wanatoobu ilaik
(Astaghfrullaah)(
rh Allaah guide us along with those
whom you have guided
And pardon us along with those who you
have pardoned
2e an ally to us along with those whom
you have allied with
And !less us rh Allaah with that which
you have !estowed upon us
And save us from the evil of what you
have decreed
*or indeed you decree and none can
insuence you
And he is not humiliated whom you have
!efriended nor is he honoured who is
your enemy
2lessed are you r tord and u3alted
%o you is all the "raise on what you have
decreed
&e seek your forgiveness rh Allaah and
turn in repentance to you)
After reciting this du'aa one can continue supplicating to his tord until he is
content) 't is important to note though that whenever you are praying in
.amaa'ah (collectively) the supplications should !e in plural form for
e3ample one should say 'Allaahumma innaa nas-alukav (rh Allaah we ask
you forv)' rather than saying 'Allaahumma innie as-alukav (rh Allaah ' ask
you for)' which is in the singular form) %he singular forms of any du'aa
should only recited when you are praying alone and not in .amaa'ah
however the plural form of any du'aa can !e recited alone andwor in
.amaa'ah)
*or this reason we have provided the a!ove Qunoot in the plural form for
you to recite !y yourself or in congregation) /owever any singular form
verses (from the Qur'aan) can !e recited alone andwor in .amaa'ah !ut
those who are following the 'maam should repeat the verse after him whilst
he is saying it)
During the time of *itnah (trials) it !ecomes recommended (or o!ligatory
during high level of xtnah) to recite Du'aa al-Qunoot in the prayer) rne is
o!liged to make du'aa for the Mu+aahideen and sincerely supplicate to
Allaah to grant the Muslim ymmah victory over the enemies of 'slaam and
make this deen dominate the uast and the &est)
't is always !etter in 'slaam to prefer others a!ove yourself therefore you
should make du'aa for yourself last after you have asked Allaah (swt) to
help others i)e) the Mu+aahideen and the Scholars) 2elow are some
e3amples which you can recite in order to ask Allaah (swt) to help and
support the &arriors of 'slaam)

"lease remem!er that the minimum we can do for our !rothers and sisters
who are facing attack !y the ,u(aar is to make du'aa for them and this is
something which Allaah (swt) will account us for on the Day of .udgement)
After supplicating for the Muslim ymmah we recommend that you seek
guidance and forgiveness for all your sins and you can memorise some of
the e3amples which the messenger of Allaah (saw) left !ehind for us !y
looking into authentic !ooks of supplications which contain no innovations
or superstitions etc)
