General Description:
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an elective program that helps students to achieve the
necessary requirements and skills to be eligible for university acceptance. The program has to ma!or components"
tutorials and AVID curriculum. Tutorials ill occur once a eek. #ach AVID student is to come prepared for the
tutorial ith questions from their core classes. $ield trips may be scheduled to visit local colleges and universities%
providing students ith the opportunity to visit the institutions firsthand.
AVID students are e&pected to be motivated and determined to achieve university acceptance at the end of
their high school career. It ill be necessary for AVID students to manage their time so that school and studies become
a top priority. This means that they ill need to be responsible for making ise and sometimes difficult choices.

The folloing materials are required in class every day. A lack of materials astes valuable class time and interferes
ith success.

0inders ill be checked and graded in the AVID class eekly. 0inders and1or backpacks ill be graded for
organi2ation% -ornell notes% materials 3 supplies% a completed daily planner% and daily 4to do5 lists. If you are
absent for 0inder -heck% due to illness% you may request a 0inder -heck on the day you return. Additional
binder checks may randomly occur throughout the year so binders must be organi2ed at all times. A minimum
of five (6) pages of -ornell notes1learning logs are required for each class each eek. At least three (*) pages
are required for AVID.

-lass ork and homeork assignments are designed to help students to develop personally and academically
and to ultimately prepare them for college and a career. #ssays ill be ritten in 78A format.
There ill be numerous individual and group pro!ects each semester.

9tudents ill be graded on each tutorial session. 9tudents earn points for their questions% participation% and
reflection during the tutorial process. 9ince tutorials are a collaborative effort% students must be present and
participate to receive credit. 9tudents ho are absent due to illness may make up points by completing a one
page riting assignment from a provided list.
