International students figure prominently in the Universitys strategic plan. The University has structures in place to
provide services for international students and to help facilitate their transition from home to the U.S. culture and
educational system. Parents will have an opportunity to ask questions and to discuss their concerns and interests.

International Student Health Issues

If your student health record is incomplete, you will receive a notice at orientation check-in on
Sunday, August 17th to go to one or more Student Health Center appointments. This is
mandatory so that you will comply with the Universitys health requirements. Please go to these
appointments even if you must miss other sessions and activities. Please bring your appointment
sheet with you to the Health Center.

Sunday, August 17

Improvisational Comedy Show & DJ Dance Party
Come to a FREE comedy show and dance party in the Tyler Haynes Commons Alice Haynes
Room & Pier & Current Game Room with new students from the Roadmap to Success,
Multicultural Affairs, WC Outdoor Adventure and RC Appalachian Trail Challenge pre-semester
programs.

Monday, August 18

Picnic Dinner
J oin the Roadmap to Success and Multicultural Affairs orientation groups for a picnic dinner at
the Weinstein Center for Recreation & Wellness for a fun evening of food, games, and sports at
URs main recreational facility. This is a mandatory event that is free of charge.

Tuesday, August 19

How to Have a Successful Intercultural Experience in the U.S.
This session will explore intercultural values and differences in social relationships and academic
expectations that international students may experience while studying in the U.S.

Immigration Issues for F-1 and J-1 visa holders - How to Maintain Your Status in the U.S.
F-1 and J -1 students will learn about maintaining their student status in the U.S. and regulations
and procedures for studying, traveling, and working on and off campus.

U.S. Laws & Campus Safety
A UR Police officer will provide safety advice and regulations to follow at the University and in
the U.S. Students will learn about U.S. laws for alcohol consumption, drug use, and driving.
Definitions of crimes such as theft, sexual assault, and harassment will be given as well as civil
rights and legal protections.

Staying Healthy at UR Student Health Center, Counseling and Psychological Services
(CAPS) & International Health Insurance Plan
Staff from the Student Health Center and CAPS will explain their services and policies.
Students will also learn about the U.S. health care system, how to use the UR international
student health insurance plan, and the plans benefits and exclusions.

UR Transportation Center Services
UR has a comprehensive system of cars, shuttles & buses to transport students around campus
and to the city of Richmond. Learn about the different transportation options & how to use them.

Explore Richmond on the GRTC Route 16 city bus with your OA group
Students will ride the bus from campus with their OA group to an urban area with the option of
either taking the bus roundtrip back to campus without stopping or exploring the surrounding
area and attractions with their group and coming back to campus on the bus, connecting UR
shuttle, or on their own. Students assigned bus departure times and destinations, GRTC transit
passes, maps & schedules are in their orientation folders. Students should also bring their Spider
Card in case they want to ride a UR shuttle back to campus. OIE will NOT pay for any
transportation, entertainment, sightseeing, or other expenses associated with this outing.

Wednesday, August 20

Campus Diversity, Civic Engagement, Chaplaincy, Women Involved in Living & Learning
(WILL) & Jepson School of Leadership Studies
Representatives from the Office of Common Ground, Bonner Center for Civic Engagement,
University Chaplaincy, Women Involved in Living & Learning, and the J epson School of
Leadership Studies will talk about campus resources for diversity & inclusion, volunteerism and
civic engagement, spiritual life, and academic programs in womens and leadership studies.

University Registrar Services & Policies
The University system of units and credits, the grading scale, the educational privacy act,
transcripts, course registration, and class & examination schedules will be explained.

Understanding the U.S. Educational System
Staff from the Writing Center, Academic Skills Center, and ESL Services will discuss faculty
expectations and academic support to assist students with writing, academic & language skills.

Open Meeting with International Student Advisory Board (ISAB)
ISAB is a bridge from the international student community to OIE and other University
departments. Meet the new Board members and learn how they can represent you at UR.

Thursday, August 21

Honor Council Presentation & Test for Undergraduate Exchange & Visiting Students
Honor Council members will explain the Universitys honor system, including expectations and
sanctions for honor code violations. All exchange students except for LAW and MBA students
are required to take this exam during international student orientation.

A Guide to Working in the U.S. for Exchange & Visiting Students
Career Services staff will discuss job search preparation and strategies for working in the U.S. as
an international exchange student, both during and after your exchange program. Topics such as
resume writing, interviewing skills, networking, and resources for job listings will be covered.

Boatwright Library Tour for Exchange & Visiting Students & Teaching Assistants
Exchange & visiting students and teaching assistants will have the opportunity to take a guided
tour of the University's main library. The tour will include an explanation of the resources
available, including the curriculum materials center.

Friday, August 22

UR Downtown tour (for Exchange & Visiting Students & TAs only)
UR Downtown is a University resource located in downtown Richmond that connects UR with
the Greater Richmond community. Students will ride the UR Downtown shuttle with their OA
group, tour the facility, and visit a nearby attraction. Students will have the option of going out
downtown afterward and coming back to campus on their own at their own expense.
