Bandwidth Industry Trend
In the article, Having been burned before, Google wont bring Fiber to San Francisco,
Journalist Dan Raile investigates the reasons of slow bandwidth speeds of San Francisco. Unlike
the technopolis San Francisco, increasing bandwidth speeds are advancing in other cities and
other countries. One major company, Google claims that they will not deliver their latest
bandwidth service due to their traumatized past relationship with the San Franciscan officials and
other liberal belief conflicts. During 2004 to 2007, Google and EarthLink failed to provide their
free citywide Wi-Fi service due to uncooperative city officials. Fiber optic bandwidth in San
Francisco called dark fiber has been restricted to city owned facilities and contracted hospitals
and clinics. Hope is still underway with a local company, Sonic.net is launching a one gigabit
pilot fiber optic service starting with outer sunset and Sonoma County. A public city owned fiber
optic service is being propose by the Board of Supervisors President, David Chu, in response to
the frustrating demands of faster bandwidths and the fear of corporate monopoly. During the
meanwhile, there is a stalemate in meeting the demands of fast bandwidth.
