Key Roles and Areas in Film Production

Writer:
The writer is responsible for researching and developing story ideas and
writing screenplays.




Producer:
The Producer is responsible for turning ideas into profitable films; they get
together a creative and talented cast and crew and are fully responsible for all
aspects of a films production.





Casting Director:
The Casting director organises the actors for all roles in the film, he arranges
interviews and auditions with artists and decides the fee actors get for playing
a part and finally works with the Director and producer to achieve their needs.



Director:
A Director is the driving force in a films production; he imagines the style and
structure of a film and then brings it to life. He carries out jobs such as casting,
script editing, shot composition, shot selection and editing. He is the link
between the production, technical and creative teams.





Film Finance:
Film finance is sorted out by a Line producer who keeps control of the costing
the production for investors, supervising the preparation of the budget and
running the day to day business of the production.





Camera Operator:
The Camera Operator is responsible for preparing and operating the camera
and all its equipment, they work with the director and director of photography
to achieve the correct shots and they manage other camera department staff
and communicate with actors.

Editor:
The Editor works together with the Director to create the finished film, they
work in an edit suite for long hours and run a team of assistants and trainees
on big productions.






Production Designer:
The Production designer defines and manages every visual aspect of a film,
they work with the director and producer to produce a budget and schedule
and they direct a team responsible for producing the visual elements, for
example sets and costumes.





Marketing:
The Film Marketing is the practice of promotion
specifically in the film industry, and usually
occurs in coordination with the process of film
distribution.
Exhibition:
This is where the film becomes available to the public, usually through
cinemas; this is the task of a film distributor who will work out the marketing
strategy.
