WHAT ARE WE LEARNING TODAY?
Science vs. pseudoscience
Empirical evidence
Objective vs. subjective reasoning

WHAT IS DATA? (P. 54)
Data: facts and figures and
other evidence collected
during a scientific
investigation

Scientists use data to draw
logical conclusions that
explain their observations
EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE
Empirical evidence is data and
observations that have been collected
through scientific processes and that also
explain a particular observation

Scientists use logical reasoning to examine
their data and reach conclusions that
explain their observations
TYPES OF REASONING
Objective
Subjective
OBJECTIVE REASONING
Reasoning that is based on evidence.
(p. 56)
(Not opinion or personal feelings)
SUBJECTIVE REASONING
Reasoning based on personal feelings
or personal values. (p. 56)

Subjective reasoning uses someones
opinions to make conclusions. This
can often lead to faulty reasoning.

PSEUDO-WHAAAAT?
Pseudoscience: a set of beliefs
that may make use of science but
whose conclusions and predictions
are not based on observation,
objective reasoning or scientific
evidence.

Many well-known scientific ideas
are actually pseudoscience
