WELCOME BACK!
Scientists use a standardized measurement system
so they are able to compare measurements and
repeat experiments done by other scientists in the
same way.

The metric system is a standard measurement
system based on the number 10

Modern scientists use a version of this system called
the International System of Units (SI)

STANDARD MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS
Length: meter
Smaller or larger units: centimeters,
kilometers, etc.

SI UNITS OF MEASURE
Mass is the measure of the amount of matter
in an object

Mass: Si unit is kilogram

A triple beam balance is usually the tool used
to measure mass
MASS
Weight i s the measure of the force of gravi ty acti ng on an
obj ect

The SI uni t used to measure wei ght i s a Newton

On Earth, mass and wei ght are the same thi ng. An obj ect has
the same wei ght no matter where i t i s. But the wei ght of an
obj ect can change depending on l ocation. Ex. On earth you
mi ght wei gh 100 pounds, on the moon you woul d wei gh 16. 6
pounds. Your mass woul d be the same i n ei ther pl ace.
WEIGHT
On Earth, mass and weight
are the same thing. An object
has the same weight no
matter where it is. But the
weight of an object can
change depending on
location. Ex. On earth you
might weigh 100 pounds, on
the moon you would weigh
16.6 pounds. Your mass
would be the same in either
place.

WEIGHT VS. MASS
Volume is the amount of space an object
takes up.

The SI unit for volume is measured using liters
and cubic centimeters
Liters measure liquids
Cubic centimeters measure solids

VOLUME
Time measures how long it
takes for an event to occur

The SI unit used to measure
time is the second
Scientists also use milliseconds,
minutes, hours, and days

TIME
Temperature measures the energy of motion of the
particles in the substance (amount of heat).

The SI unit that measures temperature is Kelvin (K).
The Kelvin scale begins at absolute 0 and only does
up.

TEMPERATURE
Density
How much mass is in a
volume
How much matter is in a
given space
How compact particles are
in a space

Which is more dense?
