Journals, manipulatives, light table, discovery table, sensory table, and the downstairs reading center will be open for children to explore during the arrival time. 8:30-8:45 Morning Meeting Morning meeting is a time to welcome everyone to school, take notice of anyone who is absent, view the calendar and the snack menu, and to discuss and plan the events for the day/week. 8:45-10:00 Indoor Investigations
8:45-10:00 Planned Small Group Activities
During choice time, the children choose to play in a variety of centers, engage in project work, and participate in small group lessons. Center choices include: Art, dramatic play, science, math, blocks, computer, writing, or light table. Children may also work in the studio at this time. Planned Small Group Activities: Detailed Cicada Observation and Drawing Last week, the children found a live cicada attempting to shed its exoskeleton. They were fascinated by what they saw and began to search the playground for other cicadas. They found many, many cicada shells and started a collection. Natalie helped them display their collection in decorative boxes. These boxes, along with special paper and sketching pencils will be added to the studio this week, along with magnifying glasses and pictures of cicadas at various stages of development so that the children may observe and attempt to document their observations through drawings. Natalie will be on hand with information about the insects in the event that the children feel further inspired to learn more. Blank books will be on hand for children who become inspired to write more about cicadas or other topics of interest. 10:00-10:15 Story Time Story: The Magic Hat by Mem Fox
This story encourages the children to identify rhyming words in a playful way. Story: Sylvester and the Magic Pebble by William Steig
Although this book is a bit longer than others, its engaging story will help the children develop their ability to listen to lengthier books in a whole-group, school setting. Story: The Paperboy by Dave Pilkey
This wordless picture book will encourage the students to use illustrations to gain meaning and create their own story together.
Fiction vs Non-Fiction
During story time, the children will compare and contrast a fiction book about insects to a non-fiction book about insects.
10:15-11:30 Snack Outdoor Investigations
Children will wash hands after story time and will gather together for a snack. After finishing their snacks children will move outdoors to continue their investigations. Materials are available to the children at this time including: Jump ropes, blocks, ramps, various obstacle courses, sidewalk chalk, dramatic play, books, trikes and scooters, gardening, balls, a basketball goal, and art supplies. Music and movement is included in outdoor time. We will also play a variety of music and have instruments and materials for children to use. Teachers will use this time to further develop any ideas the children have previously expressed an interest in exploring. Additionally, teachers will use this time to extend any ongoing project work. 11:40-12:00 Dismissal
After cleaning the outdoor area, children will get a drink of water, wash hands, and come indoors to work on calming activities with the teachers and interns as we move through the dismissal process. Tigers Lesson Plan for the Week of September 8-11 2014
