This course is a general introduction to biology in the
areas of cell biology, genetics, development, physiolo- gy, ecology, and evolution. It is intended for students with specialties in all areas, not just future scientists. After completing this course, you will not only under- stand how your body works, but will also learn how what you do influences the world around you. The content of this course is directed both inward and outward. Inward -- in addition to learning about human anato- my and physiology, you will discover mechanisms of inheritance and its implications concerning genetic disorders, genetic counseling, and acquired traits. Outward -- you will discover how your ac- tions and choices regarding the use of lim- ited resources and the generation of pollu- tion affects the biosphere. You will realize how the world is changing by variation, nat- ural selection, speciation, and how humans impact these areas. School Information First Lab of the Year This first lab will be an introduction into the diversity of life on Earth as well as the phylogenetic relationships that con- nect them. Students will use a dichoto- mous key to identify unknown animals based on visible characters and then cre- ate a tree of life linking these organ- isms together using the information they have gained from the previous weeks of lecture material.
