INTRODUCTION :
Pyrometer is derived from the Greek word
pyro which means fire.
Its a temperature measuring device but unlike
RTDs and thermocouples its not in contact with
surface.
Pyrometry is the technique for measuring
temperature without physical contact .
It depends upon the relationship between the
temperature on a hot body and then
electromagnetic radiation emitted by the body.
WORKING OF PYROMETER :-
Operation of pyrometer is based on the
measurement of radiant energy emitted by hot
body.
It consists of lens to focus radiant energy at
some point.
If distance of object from the lens is more,
radiant energy will be lost in atmosphere instead
of concentrating at fixed point and accuracy of
measurement will be decreased, therefore it is
desirable to have short distance of object from
lens.

Advantages
Fast speed of
response,
less affected by
corrosive atmosphere,
it can measure the
temp. higher than the
thermocouple.
It is portable,
light in weight,
Measure high temp.
with accuracy,
It is contactless
measuring device.

Disadvantages

Non-linear scale,
Emissivity of material
affects the
measurement.

More chances of
human error while
adjusting the image,
Device is very costly.
