Technology has affected the way cultures share and blend with each other. Some of the
things technology has affected are music, movies, sports, fashion, food, and hobbies. Also
technology has allowed people who are from different cultures to communicate and spread
ideas back and forth. Technology has also allowed the spread of cultures occur at a much faster
rate.

2. Why is mass media such a powerful force in spreading popular culture throughout the
world?
Television is a way to spread different ideas from many cultures onto different parts of
the world. Also, because television spreads the news around the world through daily
broadcasts and documents, everyone is up to date on the recent disasters, wars, and
achievements. Mass media is also a way for news and cultural ideas to spread rapidly and cover
more distances.

3. Why does the West play such a dominant role in shaping world culture?
Western domination over the mass media influenced the role west plays in shaping
world culture. Instead of eastern, or southern cultures being spread throughout is was mainly
western culture that was being viewed by many. Also western languages are mainly spoken
throughout the world because of the history of European colonization.

cultural ideas?
Non-western cultural ideas are incorporated into western life through music, clothing,
religions, and ethnic systems. Non-western cultural beliefs also influence people in Europe and
the United States.

heavily influenced by Western ways?
The people fear they will lose their own individuality. The people also fear they will lose
their own uniqueness as a nation.

6. How have different countries responded to the impact of cultural intrusion?
Many countries have made policies that reserve television broadcast time for national
programming. Some countries take American shows and rework them to their own cultures.
Also, some nations strictly censor unwanted ideas from being seen. As a result many countries
try to turn back to their traditional roots, by putting more emphasis on rites of passages and
cultural practices.
