Purpose

The purpose of the lab was to determine if certain changes in the mass of a
chewed gum occurred and why. The second purpose of the lab was to determine if
the stated mass on the packaging of junk food matches the actual mass of the food
or if there were any fluctuations in the mass.
Summary Of Lab Procedure
Remove gum from pack and determine mass with wrapper
Annotate mass
Remove gum wrapper and chew gum for approximately one minute
Place gum on wrapper again and determine new mass
Write down mass
Determine mass of food with wrapper
Write down mass
Remove food and determine mass of wrapper solely
Annotate mass
Using calculations find and solve to find the changes of mass in gum and
difference between labeled mass for food and determined mass


Lab Questions
1. During the chewing process the gum, the gum ended up losing mass instead
of gaining like I assumed it would.
2. The chewed gum lost 0.382 g compared to the original mass of the gum.
3. The gum probably lost mass due to the fact that probably while chewing
certain pieces of the gum were either dissolved or swallowed without
noticing and therefore reducing the overall mass of the gum.
4. Overall 13.57% of the overall mass of the wrapped gum was lost during the
process of chewing.
5. Compared to the stated mass, I ended up receiving more food than the
amount stated on the wrapping.
6. I ended up receiving 5.918g more than the stated amount.
7. I ended up receiving 114.8 % more food than the stated amount on the
packaging.
8. Through surveying the class, more than 50% of the class received more
food than the stated amount on the wrapping.
9. The food packaging probably gives more than the stated amount to be able
to package items faster and not have to measure exactly but if not place an
approximate amount close to annotated number to save time.
