It is important to know what are immediate needs and what issues can wait when caring for a
patient.
Stable vs. unstable patient
A = airway has the highest priority. We cannot live without oxygen, which enters our airway.
B = breathing is the next highest priority. Oxygen enters the body by breathing.
C = circulation is the third highest priority. Oxygen must be moved to the tissues where it
is needed, in order or the cells to survive.
!rioriti"ation begins with assessment. #he assessment must be perormed $uic%ly and nurses must
respond $uic%ly with appropriate interventions.
Nursing process- Assessment before analyzing the situation, planning and implementing.
Assessment (subjective, objective data, health history, physical examination lab results) is the first
nursing process and takes priority over all other steps.
Maslows Hierarchy- (Physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization.
Physiological needs are the most important basic human needs. After physiological needs have
been met can safety concerns be addressed and all the other needs.
