What is it that brings people from different countries together? Common interests and shared
pastimes are key elements but speaking the same language is of paramount importance to
forging new friendships. What if I told you there was a way to practise English not for the
sole benefit of speaking a foreign language but as a means to get to discover interesting

Cambridge Language Assessment promises a modern, integrated approach to practising
English. Penfriends places learners in a different cultural setting, each time their school of
origin befriends a fellow educational institution. Students swap cards on interesting topics,
which can then be used to generate thought-provoking speaking activities together with
simulating a real-life situation where student
Penfriends is the place to log into, if you are a student aged 11-18, looking to broaden your
horizons and connect with other children around the world.
Can you imagine robot-dragons and emerald green frogs that leap from your mind right onto
your sheet of paper? The children from August Caesarec School in Croatia can and through
the Penfriends project they have written about and drawn their favourite animals into reality.
Their cards were promptly mailed to us as well as uploaded on the Penfriends platform.
We are happy to say that our notice boards are now filled with enchanting creatures that
merrily greet you on your way to class, courtesy of our Croatian penfriends. Needless to say,
the children at Shakespeare School have replied with an equally generous stack of cards to
delight our new schoolmates with.
Portugal is the next stop on our journey to discover the world through English. We are busy
designing pictures and writing texts about where we live. Our new Penfriends from Colgio
do Bom Sucesso in Lisbon are very excited to learn more about Romania, as we are to find
out more about their country.
