The IEEE EMBS Student Club at Johannes Kepler University in Austria organized a workshop on microscopy and medical image processing. Thirteen presenters from nine institutes gave seminars on topics ranging from mathematics to biophysics related to microscopy and medical image processing. Participants from the region were required to submit abstracts and applications to attend. To advertise the event, fliers were distributed at Johannes Kepler University and other local universities. The workshop helped develop the student leader's skills and was rewarding to organize, though future events would not require such lengthy abstract submissions.

DESCRIPTION OF EVENT: In May 2006, the EMBS Student Club recruited thirteen presenters to give seminars on topics ranging from mathematics to biophysics, representing nine institutes and covering various aspects of microscopy and medical image processing. The topic changed, grew, shifted and metamorphosed into its final version that also encompassed more general themes, like inverse problems and promising approaches from applications in other fields. Participants from the region were required to submit abstracts and an application to attend the workshop.
NAME ONE MAJOR HURDLE OF THE EVENT AND HOW IT WAS OVERCOME: To ensure that interested people in the area knew about the event, we started to advertise the event at Johannes Kepler University as well as other universities in the area. Jodi Strock (EMBS Executive Office) provided invaluable help by distributing the workshop announcement on the IEEE mailing list.

HOW DID THIS EVENT CONTRIBUTE TO LEADERSHIP SKILLS? XXX
FUTURE RECOMMENDATIONS: On second thought, next time we would not scare applicants by requiring "up to 4 pages abstracts". I couldn't find any serious organizational problems to talk about, and the workshop somehow seemed to evolve by itself.
