Strategy Worksheet

Strategy #5
Strategy Name:

REAP (Read, Encode, Annotate, Ponder)

Brief Description (in your own words):

REAP is a strategy for helping students understand the text. This practice will help readers
better comprehend the literature. Students revise the text for each stage of REAP, and as
they do they internalize the content of the reading as they think of ways to represent the
main ideas.

How you plan to use this strategy in your Practicum, Internship, Student Teaching, or
in your own classroom:

I will present the students with text, and they will Read on their own (R), then they will
Encode the text by putting the essence of what was read in their own words (E). They will
Annotate the text by writing down the main ideas (A), and then the students will Ponder
what they read by thinking and talking with others to make connections and develop
questions about the content.
