Program Presentation: Kingdom of My Mind The Undergraduate Journey

Purpose:
This program is designed for potential new undergraduate students. There are
four student learning outcomes. The principle student learning objective would
be creating an understanding of the developmental process that characterizes the
growth of the traditionally aged undergraduate student, or the process of Self
Authorship as characterized by Marcia Baxter-Magolda. The second student
learning outcome of the presentation shall be to create an understanding of the
value of critical thinking skills in understanding self, and self in relation to others.
Third student learning objective would be assisting students in understand the
value of diversity in defining ones authentic self, and establishing a critically
examined system of values and ethics. Lastly, the presentation will seek to
impress how it is that the university setting is particular suited to engage students
in the developmental process, and illustrate a universitys resources, staff, and
faculty as powerful tools and allies for this process.


Preparation Materials:

The presentation shall be hosted in the universitys theater. It is ideal since
a large location is with comfortable seating is needed capable of hosting
approximately 30 to 150 people.
The University of the West will provide bussing service for the juniors and
senior of its local high school students with minimum groups of 25 students
per bus.
Student participants will sign in at the event, and presentation outlines, and
the assessment tool shall be distributed upon arrival.
The university shall provide lunch and drinks for student participants to be
place at the rear partitioned room adjacent to the main theater.
These assessment tools will be returned by students in exchange for
lunches provided by the university, but this should not be done overtly.
Handouts should be prepared and distributed to the students regarding the
access of resources for the different departments. These should be as
comprehensive as necessary to convey the needed information.

Directions / Guidelines:

The presenter from the Admission department shall moderate this
program. The moderators job will be to make the event enjoyable,
enriching, and informative. The moderator will also be the person to
introduce the other student affairs and academic affairs representatives
from the other departments or divisions.
The above stated student learning outcomes will be discussed, as well as
the unique factors with characterize the University of the West, and on
which the Admissions Office is able to present a convincing benefits for
student attendance.
A second member from the Admissions Office shall be responsible for the
collection of the assessment tools, and the set up and distribution of the
lunches shall be staffed as necessary from university faculty, staff, and
student workers.

Assessment:

A survey instrument shall be passed out to the participants at the beginning
of the event. Students understandings of critical thinking skills, self-
authorship, diversity in relation to understanding self and self in relation to
others, and the value of the university setting to the undergraduate whole
person learning shall be measured.
The surveys shall be collected as the students move systematically through
the lunch line. First, surveys are collected, and then the student proceeds
to the lunch distribution.
The original assessment tools will be maintained by the Admissions Office.
Students who expressed interest in the University of the West shall be
contacted by the Admissions Office staff, and encouraged to submit
applications if appropriate. Copies of the assessment tools will also be
submitted to the universitys statistical office to measure the effectiveness
of the presentation through it analysis, as well as maintained by the
Admissions Office in relation to its recruitment efforts.
