Text Structures and Supports

Brief Description:

Text structures and supports are used to inform the reader of what to expect during
a reading. These usually fall into three categories: conventions of text (i.e., titles,
heading, subheadings, first/last paragraphs, paragraphs/sentences, legends/keys,
diagrams/illustrations), conventions of text (i.e., bold type, italics, white space,
punctuation), and conventions of genre (i.e., fairy tales, textbooks, stories, letters).









How you plan to use this strategy in your Practicum, Internship, Student
Teaching, or in your own classroom:

In my classroom, I plan to go over these text structures and supports at the
beginning of the school year, particularly before initially assigning reading from the
textbook. It is extremely beneficial to walk students through the layout of their
textbook and, therefore, how to effectively read it.

I would specifically point out headings and subheadings and show that they provide
the reader with a general idea of what kind of information will be found in the text
below. I would then go over the purpose of the images, showing that each picture,
chart, table, diagram, etc. serves a purpose and can provide additional information
to expand on what is described in the text. I would also inform them that important
terms are often indicated by bold or italic type, depending on the text. I would lastly
explain the use of the references in the back of the book, such as the glossary and
the index.
