Wake acknowledged that it was a big deal to win the award, but also was quick to pass around praise among his teammates. It was those same teammates, along with his coaches, who named Wake a permanent captain for the 2014 season, and for the Dolphins defensive end, that was an even bigger deal than getting honored by the league. Probably out of every kind of personal accolade or award or recognition Ive got- ten, that is the most important or rewarding one that Ive ever received, Wake said. Because a lot of things, whether its Pro Bowl, All-Pro, Player of the Week not to get me wrong because I definitely love those things its a lot of outsiders choos- ing. Whereas in this locker room, coaches and players involved, they voted, they know me, they see me 12 hours a day, six days a week and they see all the stuff that nobody sees on SportsCenter or on TV. They see whether I work hard. Do I answer the right questions in team (meetings)? Do I lead the rookies? All the things that nobody else is going to see, they see. And they still chose you to be a representation of that team. To me that means more than some of the other things that happened because its internal. That to me is something that Im definitely to cherish and probably the deep- est feeling Ive gotten of appreciation for my whole career. Wake was voted as a captain for the defense by his teammates and coaches the week of the regular season. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill was selected as the captain of the offense, and Jason Trusnik got the nod for special teams. I want to be in that position, I want to be the leader of the offense and the guy that people look to when its crunch time and when something needs to be said. RYAN TANNEHILL 9,10,11,12-CAPTAINS FEATURE 9/15/14 3:26 PM Page 2 DOLPHINS VS. CHIEFS | 11 Wake and Trusnik seemed like natural choices considering each is the elder statesman in his group, while Tannehill plays a position that requires leadership skills. The players and the coaches obviously see a lot of the positive leadership traits that he has, Head Coach Joe Philbin said of Tannehill. He sets a great example. He does things right on and off the field. Hes extremely professional in everything he does. I think thats kind of why hes in the position he is. I wasnt surprised, Tannehill said. I want to be in that position, I want to be the leader of the offense and the guy that peo- ple look to when its crunch time and when something needs to be said. Its not a sur- prise, but its definitely an honor. Trusnik has been a core special teams player since joining the Dolphins as an unre- stricted free agent in 2011, even though he now will be taking on a starting role at line- backer. More than anything right now, to be voted upon by your peers, for me its excit- ing its voted on by them, Trusnik said. It just means that theres some respect there and stuff like that. Nothing is going to change for me. Im going to continue to help this team wherever I can and be that leader in whatever situation special teams, defense and as a team. This is the first time since Joe Philbin became Dolphins head coach in 2012 that the team has had permanent captains. For the past two seasons, the Dolphins alternated captains from game to game. We kind of talked about it as a team last spring and there were opinions that maybe that would be the way to go, Philbin said after practice Wednesday. I See CAPTAINS, page 12 That to me is something that Im definitely to cherish and probably the deepest feeling Ive gotten of appreciation for my whole career. CAMERON WAKE 9,10,11,12-CAPTAINS FEATURE 9/15/14 3:26 PM Page 3 12 | FINSIDERS PLAYBOOK kind of contemplated it over the course of the summer and decided that this was going to be the way were going to pro- ceed. Everybody participated, players and coaches, and thats where we came to, those three guys. So for every Dolphins game this season, we will see Tannehill, Trusnik and Wake with the big C on their jersey. Its just a reminder, Tannehill said. Its a reminder, its a symbol of being chosen by my teammates and the respect that they have for me. The C doesnt just denote something that youre given one time and its done; you have to constantly uphold your responsibility as a leader of the team. Its a good reminder of that. For Wake, the C means enough that he plans of having the jersey with it framed at some point. Wake long has been seen as a great example for his teammates because of his work ethic, and he doesnt plan on letting up anytime soon. I dont want to say (I was) surprised, but it was, I guess, humbling even more, Wake said. Because you realize even more a lot of guys whether its a 10-year vet like (Randy) Starks or a rookie like (Anthony) Johnson all kind of watch the good and the bad. If youre out there loafing, then so is he. And if youre out there kicking your butt and doing what youre supposed to do, the leadership comes on the field, off the field and vocal, non-vocal. I mean, its all around. It was humbling for sure. CAPTAINS, from page 11 Nothing is going to change for me. The Dolphins top passing performance against Kansas City was turned in by Scott Mitchell, who passed for 344 yards and three touchdowns in 1993 three weeks after Dan Marino sustained a season-ending Achilles injury. Chiefs tight end Anthony Fasano had four touchdowns in his two games against Kansas City while he was a member of the Dolphins. The most passing yards (328) for a Kansas City quarterback in this series was recorded in 2002 by Trent Green, who would join the Dolphins five years later. The Dolphins have won six of the last seven meetings in Miami, the only exception coming in 2005 when the Chiefs won 30-20 in a game that was moved to a Friday night because of the impending arrival in South Florida of Hurricane Wilma. 17-GAME PLAN - QUICK HITTERS 9/15/14 3:19 PM Page 1 18 | FINSIDERS PLAYBOOK GAME PLAN CONNECTIONS | TODAYS MATCHUP | LAST TIME Dolphins offensive tackle Branden Albert was a first-round draft choice of the Chiefs in 2008 and played with the team from 2008-13. He finished the game at quarter- back on the day Don Shula became the win- ningest coach in NFL history. Chiefs assistant secondary coach Al Harris played cornerback for the Dolphins in 2010 as was a coaching intern with the team in 2012. Chiefs tight end Anthony Fasano played with the Dolphins from 2008-12. Chiefs defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson was a seventh-round pick of the Dolphins in 2005 and was with Miami until August 2007. Chiefs cornerback Chris Owens played for the Dolphins in 2013. Chiefs cornerback Sean Smith was a sec- ond-round draft choice of the Dolphins and played with the team from 2009-12. Chiefs safety Kelcie McCray appeared in four games for the Dolphins in 2013. Chiefs practice squad wide receiver Armon Binns played for the Dolphins late in the 2012 season before spending all of 2013 on injured reserve. 18-GAME PLAN-CONNECTIONS 9/15/14 3:16 PM Page 1 3-BALL WATCH AD 8/21/14 7:53 PM Page 1 20 | FINSIDERS PLAYBOOK GAME PLAN TODAYS MATCHUP | LAST TIME Chiefs looking to recapture 13 magic By ALAIN POUPART @apoupartFins The Dolphins are home today for their only scheduled 4:25 p.m. start at Sun Life Stadium this season. Todays matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs is a reunion game of sorts, with several former Dolphins players returning to Miami. Among the better-known Chiefs player who spent time with the Dolphins are tight end Anthony Fasano and cornerback Sean Smith, both of whom started for Miami for several years. On the other side, Dolphins left tackle Branden Albert will be facing the team with which he spent the past six seasons after being a first-round pick of the Chiefs in 2008. The Chiefs are looking to get back on track today after a difficult offseason and an even tougher start to the 2014 season. Kansas City absorbed significant losses in free agency, particularly on the offensive line. Albert, for example, left to join the Dolphins after earning his first Pro Bowl invitation in 2013. The Chiefs then opened the 2014 regular season at home against the Tennessee Titans and suffered a 26-10 upset loss. As if that werent bad enough, Kansas City also lost Pro Bowl linebacker Derrick Johnson and starting defensive lineman Mike DeVito to season- ending Achilles injuries in that game. Kansas City then dropped to 0-2 after los- ing at Denver last Sunday. So the Chiefs face an uphill climb to try to return to the playoffs after their remarkable turnaround in 2013. After going 2-14 in 2012, the Chiefs put together an 11-5 season on the strength of an opportunistic defense and the two-way con- tributions of running back Jamaal Charles. The Chiefs began the 2013 season at 9-0 before stumbling down the stretch. They then squandered a 38-10 lead against the Indianapolis Colts in the wild-card playoffs to see their season come to a screeching halt. Quarterback Alex Smith came up big in that game, though, and that convinced the Chiefs to give him a long-term contract this summer. Along with Charles, Smith has another playmaker to help him on offense in wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, the former Miami Norland High star. On defense, the Chiefs have several dif- ference-makers, including nose tackle Dontari Poe, linebacker Tamba Hali and safe- ty Eric Berry. But the Chiefs somehow need to put it all together and fast. The Chiefs made a commitment this offseason to Alex Smith as their quarterback. 20-TODAY'S MATCHUP 9/15/14 3:20 PM Page 1 DOLPHINS VS. CHIEFS | 21 GAME PLAN LAST TIME The Dolphins recorded their first victory of the season after an 0-7 start while snap- ping the Chiefs four-game winning streak in stunning fashion. After Kansas City took a 3-0 lead, the Dolphins answered with two TD passes from Matt Moore to tight end Anthony Fasano to take a 14-3 halftime lead. The Dolphins put the game away with two touchdowns a 14-yard pass from Moore to Brandon Marshall and a 28-yard run by Reggie Bush in the span of 1:57 in the third quarter. The Dolphins kept the Chiefs out of the end zone despite Kansas City getting inside the Miami 10-yard line twice in the second half. What goes into the decision of whether to defer after winning the coin toss? It changes. We study and we look at that. We get together and we talk about the coin toss as a staff. I talk with the coordinators, and we study the last six or eight times that our opponent has won the toss and what theyve done. Usually, when you study that, some teams always defer, but thats not usu- ally the case. There are always some rea- sons. Sometimes it might be wind. Sometimes it might be you dont want to give their offense another possession. Again, Im not in their brains. I dont know if its rock solid that (the coin toss) will always be deferred. Q. How much does Jason Trusniks versa- tility help the linebacker corps? Hes a football player. He has a good grasp of the system. Hes really got a good grasp at each position. I think he can help us really at any of the three positions. Hes been around the game for a while. Hes got some experience. He knows how to play the game. He doesnt get rattled. Hes a pretty good communicator. So those are some of the reasons we liked him. Q. How important is ball placement from the quarterback to wide receivers in the offense? Its absolutely essential. One of the things we were talking about is, just as we Head Coach Joe Philbin Defensive end Cameron Wakes hard work paid off in the season opener against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. 24,25-PHILBIN COLUMN 9/15/14 3:12 PM Page 1 were out at practice, even against routes on air and just little things, every time we get a rep, it doesnt really matter what the route is. But as we all know, yards after the catch is a big part of the game. You cant always count on 30-, 40- yard completions down the field. No team can really live on that, so the ability to get a guy in space and keep his speed and game speed, and maintain that separation from a defender is huge. Its absolutely huge. Q. Do you feel Cameron Wake is fully back from his injury last season? He looks good. Hes played well. We showed the team, I want to say he played 62 plays (in the opener against the Patriots) if Im not mistaken and we showed the whole team in the team meeting the last play on defense. His rush and his play speed I thought were excellent. I think he takes good care of himself and he appears to be in good physical condition, and he plays the game hard. Q. Have you noticed if Knowshon Moreno is a different person on game day? Hes very competitive. Hes very enthusi- astic and loves the opportunity to compete and play. But hes been very coachable on the sidelines. I think hes been fine. Q. How much of a comfort level do you have with rookie defensive tackle Anthony Johnson? Really, since hes gotten here, hes kind of flashed, so to speak. He did so in the offsea- son program and the OTAs. He displayed really good quickness and get-off. And then I thought in the preseason and training camp and the preseason games, he had good production. Hes still learning an awful lot. Q. What went into your decision to name permanent captains? We talked about it throughout the course of the spring. We had some discussions as a whole team, players, coaches, and we decided that we were going to move more to a permanent captain position, and we all voted. Weve been talking all along about we have one team. The coaches and the players, we are all going to vote and we are all going to have a say, and thats what we did. DOLPHINS VS. We had beaten Kansas City in my first play- off game as a rookie in 1990 at home. We were very familiar with the personnel that they had. They were a very good defensively coached football team. I dont think it was just the moment of two future Hall of Fame quarterbacks going against each other that is memorable. The matchup was really important for us. We felt like we had a good team. We won the division that year. We felt we were primed and ready to make a run at the Super Bowl. Joe Montana and the Chiefs were the first obstacle on that road. Anybody who knows Dan Marino knows what type of competitor he is. He really wanted to win. We were at home. I wasnt on that team when he lost the Super Bowl to the 49ers and Montana, but I think payback was definitely on his mind. We were very aware of what Montana had done for so many years in San Francisco and what he brought to Kansas City. They also had Marcus Allen and Derrick Thomas. They had so many great players that we knew that we could not let our guard down at all. We felt that no lead was safe and there was no amount of time left on the clock that we could leave them with. I think being in a game like that with the talent on the field was certainly memorable. There were multiple Hall of Famers in Don Shula, Dan Marino, Joe Montana, Derrick Thomas, Marcus Allen. That was one of the thrills of a game like that. To be around such great players in a game so meaning- ful and have those guys duel it out. It was a tough task having Derrick Thomas come off the edge. I remember Richmond Webb had a tough day with him. It was very challenging for the offensive line. We knew we had to run the football and we had to give Dan time to get the ball to Irving Fryar. We knew if we did that we had a great chance to win. It was so much fun after the season to be at the Pro Bowl. Everyone was stealing Joes jersey because it was his first AFC Pro Bowl after being in the NFC all those years. To me, I was in awe. It was my first Pro Bowl, so I was the rookie of the Pro Bowl. I had Richmond and my buddy Cortez Kennedy to help through the week. It was a thrill because I had grown up seeing Montana and all the magic he had done and to be able to be there and block for him after blocking for Dan Marino was a lot of fun. So you run into someone who has never seen you play, how would you describe yourself? JL: Physical. Intense. Passionate. Catching ability. Running ability. Selfless. Tenacious. Im everywhere on the field. 2. You ran a poor time at the combine and thats prob- ably why you slipped to the second round. Did that put a chip on your shoulder? JL: I wouldnt say a chip. I play with passion all the time. Unfortunately, I had an injury and it slowed me at the combine. I just dont think it was in Gods plan for me to go in the first round. So the Dolphins got me in the second round and Im happy to be here. Everything happens for a reason. 3. You sit down for your perfect dinner. You can pick one person to be at the table and anything to eat. Who is sitting at the table and what are you eating? JL: My uncle has recently passed away. He meant so much to me. He would be at the table with me. We would be eating Thanksgiving din- ner and the conversation would be great. The food? Plenty of turkey, stuffing, dirty rice, yams, peas. All the good stuff. I wouldnt mind someone like LeBron James at the table, but Id have to choose my uncle over everyone else. 4. What was your most memorable moment playing football at LSU? JL: The last game at the LSU stadium and com- ing back from behind against Arkansas. I was making big plays all over the field. To finish my home career that way was special. I made a one-handed catch in that game that every- one keeps talking about. I went over the guys back to catch the ball. It was a big third-down play. I think thats a play thatll be in the LSU highlights for- ever. By ANDY COHEN 58| FINSIDERS PLAYBOOK 10 QUESTIONS WITH JARVIS LANDRY 58,59-TEN QUESTIONS 9/15/14 3:21 PM Page 1 5. You have put together a highlight reel of amazing catches throughout your career. Do you ever look at some of those catches and wonder how you pulled it off? JL: Maybe after I see the film the first time. Truthfully, I expect to make catches in tight windows. I expect to make acrobatic catches. For me its, whats next? What can I do the next time that was better than what I did the last time? Is there a catch I cant make? No. I honestly believe that. 6. How certain are you that the best is yet to come for Jarvis Landry? JL: Im a life-long learner. I believe in con- stant learning, constant improvement and development. One of my special teams coaches at LSU, who is now with the Jets, told me about this Japanese term called Kaizen. That means skill development and constantly chasing yourself to get better. Thats what Im about. Thats why Im always going to improve. Its all about Kaizen. 7. Tell us what you are like away from football, your passions and interests? JL: Music. All kinds of music. Country. Rock. R&B. Jazz. Blues. You name it, I like it. Family is also very important to me. Those are my passions. I also love to play the guitar. I love to write poetry. I love to do things to relax my mind. 8. Have you had a welcome-to-the- NFL moment yet? JL: Ive had a few already. Most of them have come in practice. Seeing Cameron Wake running me down from behind. That was amazing. Then to play against Cortland Finnegan and having him grab me and chal- lenge me and doing all the little things that he does. Those are the moments that really introduced me to the NFL. 9. How long do you want to play this game, and what do you want people to say about you when you are through? JL: I want to play as long as my body allows me to. Thats the love I have for this game. As far as leaving the game, I just want to leave my mark, leave my legacy. Ive said this before that Im chasing something bigger than the Hall of Fame. For me, as a player and a man of God, I have been put on this stage to touch other lives. For me, its about trying to change the world to make it better by using this pedestal of sport that has been given to me. 10. After going through training camp, after going through the presea- son, are you convinced that you can make it in this league? JL: Absolutely. No doubt about it. I look around here and I know I belong. The Dolphins organization believed that, too, by taking me in the second round. For me, its about constant improvement. Coming to work with a clear head. Making all the plays. Im fortunate to be here and Im going to make the most of this opportunity. DOLPHINS VS. CHIEFS | 59 Im a life-long learner. On Dec. 4, 2011, a little more than an hour before the Dolphins and Raiders game at Sun Life Stadium, team founder Joe Robbie and Dolphins Hall of Famers Don Shula, Dan Marino, Bob Griese, Nick Buoniconti, Jim Langer, Larry Little, Larry Csonka, Dwight Stephenson and Paul Warfield were honored as the inaugural class to have their names immortalized in bronze. The second class of the Walk of Fame was inducted on Dec. 16, 2012 and included Tim Bowens, A.J. Duhe, Manny Fernandez, Nat Moore, Earl Morrall and Don Strock. On Dec. 29, 2013, Kim Bokamper, O.J. McDuffie, Eugene Mercury Morris and Keith Sims were officially inducted as the third Walk of Fame class. Today in pregame ceremonies at the Joe Robbie Alumni Plaza outside Gate C we wel- come the fourth class of Dolphins greats into the Walk of Fame. Ed Newman represents the teams foun- dation era from 1966-75. He started at both right and left guard for the Dolphins from 1973 through 1984, going to three Super Bowls during that time, starting with Super Bowl VIII. He was selected to four straight Pro Bowls from 1981 through 1984 and twice was named the teams Outstanding Offensive Lineman. Active in the South Florida commu- nity ever since his retirement, he still serves as a Miami-Dade County criminal court judge. During his career from 1979-87, he rushed for 3,543 yards and also caught 383 passes for an addi- tional 3,592 yards, becoming the only player in Dolphins history to rank among the teams top 10 leaders in both career rushing and receptions. He is perhaps best known for his part in the unforgettable 87 Circle Curl Lateral play at the end of the first half of the AFC playoff game against the San Diego Chargers on Jan. 2, 1982. Wide receiver Duriel Harris caught a 20-yard pass from quarterback Don Strock and then lateraled it to Nathan, who ran 25 yards for the score. Following his playing days with the team, Nathan also served as an assistant coach on Don Shulas staff from 1989 through 1995. A Pro Bowl selection in 1990, Jeff Cross was a defensive standout and he represents the Dolphins 1986-95 era. Pressuring the quarterback from his defensive end position from 1988-96, he was the teams dominant pass rusher during that time, and his 59.5 career sacks still ranks as the fifth-highest total in team history. Sam Madison represents the Dolphins 1996-2008 era and is one of the greatest defensive backs in team history. Playing from 1997-2005, he became the first Dolphins cornerback ever selected to the Pro Bowl, earning that honor four straight seasons starting in 1999. His 31 career inter- ceptions ranks him third in Dolphins history, and even after his retirement he continues to be an integral part of the organization in his current role as a member of the FINSIDERS broadcast team. Who is the toughest wide receiver you have faced? Calvin Johnson because hes just got the rare combination of being as big as a tight end but being as fast as a receiver. Then on top of being fast hes got great body control. 2. Who sets the bar at your position? Ill go with Champ Bailey because hes been doing it at a high level for a long time, so youve got to respect a player like that. 3. What player did you admire growing up? My favorite player growing up was Barry Sanders. I was a running back for a while. I was an offensive player and that was my favorite player. That was my number in high school, 20, and I had it in Atlanta. 4. What has been the most memorable moment of your career? My first interception in a Monday night game was against Drew Brees (Nov. 2, 2009 in New Orleans). A lot of people remember I jumped pretty high for it, so that was a cool play. 5. What coach had the biggest influence on your playing career? Emmitt Thomas. Hes the DB coach for the Chiefs now and he was my first DB coach. Hes a Hall of Fame DB. He tells you how it is and hes just a good coach. He played the game, so you respect everything he says. He coached a lot of players, he did a lot of things and he looked out for me and took me under his wing with me being an undraft- ed free agent and believed in what I could do. I thank him a lot and for my whole career. 74| FINSIDERS PLAYBOOK 74,75-MY GENERATION 9/15/14 3:53 PM Page 1 1. Who was the toughest wide receiver you faced? Randy Moss because of his speed, height and jumping ability when the ball was in the air. He had a knack for just going up and attacking the ball like he was a basketball player. 2. Who sets the bar at your position? Right now it has to be Richard Sherman because hes been on the field the most and hes been the player thats making the most plays. Darrelle Revis is not far behind, but I still need to see him come back from that injury. I didnt really see much from him from Tampa this past year. 3. What player did you admire growing up? Deion Sanders is one of the guys I looked up to not only because of the way he played but because he was a two- sport player and I love baseball. He defi- nitely was the corner that I idolized and wanted to be but I didnt have the speed to do it, so I had to work with quickness. 4. What was the most memorable moment of your career? Definitely having the opportunity to knock off the undefeated New England Patriots with the New York Giants in the Super Bowl. I remember going on NFL Network and saying, hey, the 1972 Dolphins can now pop champagne. I still had the Dolphins in my heart even though I won the Super Bowl with another team. 5. What coach had the biggest influence on your playing career? Mel Phillips was my defensive backs coach here with the Dolphins for nine years. He played for San Francisco for 18- plus years and he coached in the NFL for another 20-plus years. He really allowed me to become the player that I was. He took every one of his players and he devel- oped the game around them and I have to tip my hat off to him and say I really learned a lot. Howard Schellenberger and Ron Cooper from the University of Louisville were the ones who really guided me and put me in this position, but Mel took me over the top and gave me every- thing that I really needed. CHIEFS | 79 THE LAST WORD BY ANDY COHEN I have to admit Im a stickler for clock man- agement in NFL games. It drives me bonkers when precious seconds are wasted. I scratch my head when coaches incorrectly utilize their timeouts. Thats one of the reasons I am impressed with Joe Philbin. He gets it. He understands. He is as good at managing the clock as any coach I have covered. And if you havent noticed before, try pay- ing attention to it today against the Chiefs. It very well could have a direct impact on the final score. I recently took Philbin aside to discuss this exact topic. I mentioned it and you could almost see his eyes light up. Its a huge part of the game, he said. Its been important to me for a long time, but its even more impor- tant now. I always want to give this team the best chance to win. Like last season at Indianapolis when Philbin used his timeouts on defense late in the first half to get one more possession that ended with a 55-yard field goal as the clock expired. A big three points? Late in the game the Colts were driving for what would have been a winning score. But they were down by four and couldnt tie or win with a field goal. You look back, said Philbin, and those Joe Philbin is always on the clock See LAST WORD, page 80 Head Coach Joe Philbins use of timeouts doesnt happen by chance; he spends time before each game going over different situations that might arise. 79,80-LAST WORD 2 9/15/14 3:27 PM Page 1 points at the end of the first half were huge. The Colts had a fourth down at our 23-yard line. They had to go for it. We stopped them on fourth down and won the game. If we dont kick that field goal at the end of the half, if I dont use those timeouts on defense, the Colts are instead kicking a field goal to win the game. Things like that happen all the time. And Philbin is almost obsessed with being ready for every possible situation. Thursday nights during the season, Philbin meets with special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi and special teams assistant Marwan Maalouf. They discuss every conceiv- able clock-related scenario. I wish I were a fly on that wall. We look at unique endings to games, Philbin said. We look at clock management. If we are down by two possessions, when is the right time to start calling our timeouts on defense? Is it with five minutes left? With six minutes left? Should we wait for the two- minute warning? We try to take everything into account. But Philbin goes even further than that. He studies other games, other coaches, other philosophies. You can learn so much that way, he said. But its also important that you have your own way of doing things. Like a season-long timeout chart that Philbin keeps. Every good timeout is high- lighted in green, every bad one in red. He evaluates it all during the course of the year, always trying to find another edge, always wondering whether he could have done something differently. If you have one timeout left on offense, when do you use it? Philbin asks. These are questions I always ask myself. Few things bother Philbin more than wast- ed seconds. He knows how they add up. He knows what they could mean late in a game. I asked him which coaches he admires from a game management standpoint. The first name he mentioned was Bill Belichick. You look at New England and how good they are in two-minute drives and you have to be impressed, he said. But there are many coaches like that. They understand the importance of managing the clock. Philbin studies his use of challenge flags, knowing all too well that a faulty challenge will eliminate a valuable timeout. His mind dissects so much in those precious seconds when he has to decide whether to pull out that red flag and toss it on the field. Hows he doing? Eight of the nine plays he challenged last season were overturned in his favor. Thats an impressive percentage. But the perfectionist that he is, Philbin still laments about the one that didnt go his way. We focus so much on the big decisions made during the course of a game, we tend to lose track of all the small decisions that also have so much to do with the outcome. This is where Philbin is on top of his game. Always thinking ahead. Always dissecting every timeout. Always trying to steal a few seconds that, who knows, could lead to another possession just like it did last season in Indy. I take a lot of pride in this, Philbin said. And the Dolphins are certainly glad he does. 80 | FINSIDERS PLAYBOOK LAST WORD, from page 79 Its been important to me for a long time, but its even more important now.
